Cracked head!

Any idea why a head would crack? i was just wonder alothough it is only gunna cost my 150 bucks to get a new one so it isn't too bad. The crask is external from the water jacket to the environment.

When did you discover the crack? Early in a ride on a cold morning? After a stream crossing when the bike was steaming hot?

Where is the crack?
Why not just have it welded? A lot cheaper than a new head, and if it's just the water jacket, should be no big deal. I won't even get into the JB Weld scenario.... ;)
