I recently got an 03 CRF 450, and I absolutely love the bike. I'd like to clear up a few things I've heard, and get some first hand feedback. The airfilter seems to seat well enough to the airbox, but did Honda fix the airbox to airboot problem that was on the 02s? Also, I've heard that the trans oil check bolt is flawed and when changing the oil you shouldn't go by the check bolt. If you do, you won't have enough oil in the trans....true or rumor? Is there anything else regarding maintanence that I should know?
Thanks!!

I've had the '03 since they came out. The airbox thing is fixed. I oil my
filter with no-Toil and make sure it seats properly. That's it.

When I drain and add oil to the transmission, I *measure* 600cc and
I make sure I get it all in there. Even if I have to start the bike for ten
or fifteen seconds and then stop it to finish filling. No problems.

One last thing. I made a chain tool. I took a 15.2 mm long 3/8" wooden
dowell and pasted a photocopy of a mm tape measure along it. Then I
covered the paper with clear Scotch tape. This makes it a no-brainer to
check for 30 mm of chain slack and 15.2 mm of max chain stretch. It's
a real popular tool in the pits.

The only mods I've done to this bike are to add the radiator braces and
the Ty Davis idle fuel adjust that you can turn with your fingers.

You're gonna love it.

The bolt hole for the trans oil is in the correct spot... if you do it the way the manual says to. You have to fill it, then start the bike, then shut it off and let sit a minute then refill until it comes out the hole.

People were just filling to the hole and then once they started the motor the level would be too low.

I just add 590cc and never remove the bolt, it's easier that way.
