Today was my second ride on the 06 crf450r, bought it new last week. after the first ride I changed the oil and check and adjusted the valves. I started it with out any problem, maybe 4 kicks, I pushed in the choke after about 30 sec. and continued to warm it up. After about 30 more sec. of fast idle it made a eerrrrch sound for about 5 sec. and stopped. This sound was as loud as the exhaust note. It stopped and never maid the sound again and it ran like the new bike it is. Has anyone any ideas what this was or where i should start to look?

Same issue with my '06 and other years of the CRF450. It's the kickstart idler gear that is temporarily dry and howling (it's loud).

Don't use the oil check screw hole as an indicator that you've put a sufficient amount of oil in your tranny (you may end up with too little). Just pour in the recommended amount as shown in the manual. Some people even add a bit more (I do), but that would need to be your decision.

No problems with the kickstart idler gear "screeching" since I've had sufficient oil in the transmission.

I don't have an R but I run a full quart in the tranny side. I do ride in 5th for long runs at high speeds is why I do it.
