Dealing on a leftover 02 CR250

I plan on making the purchase this week. My local honda dealer has a leftover 02 CR250. What do you think is a fair out the door price. I think I can get it down to $5000 plus $200 honda bucks for helmet/gear.

we also might purchase an XR100 or crf150 at the same time. Do you think I would get a better deal buying them together? I have never bought a new dirtbike, so I'm not familiar with how much they will come down. My thinking is that he would come down alot more selling two bikes at once. Any advice?

I'm in Columbia, SC. I have a 2003 CR250 that I bought when I bought my CRF. It's brand new, never had gas in it. I bought it for a friend that never came up with the money, so I need to turn it loose. I got a deal on it for buying multiple bikes, so I'll sell it for under $5000 and there won't be any tax or any other fees like at a dealer.

Thanks man, I appreciate that. I am going through Honda finance right now, they have a decent long-term rate of 6.9 for 60 mos (of course I'll pay it off much sooner). Im going to purchase the bikes that way, and then use cash for trailer and equipment. If i was paying cash, I would be all over that deal.

I just dont wanna get screwed on the CR. I may end up in columbia anyways...dealers are very few in this area.

Well, if you change your mind, pick up a Trader and get the number.
But $5000 for a leftover 02 may be a bit much, because the 03's can be had in that range and haven't had a years depreciation yet. If you're going to keep it for a long time (5+ years), it may not be an issue. But if you had to sell it in a year you would take a beating on it.

Thanks! I plan on keeping this one a long time. I doubt I'll outgrow it. I've never had a new bike, my last was a 92 cr125...sold it a few yrs ago. Any bike newer that 7-8 yrs was 'new' to me. I'm thrilled to be getting a new bike and never wondering about its history. I think I'm most excited about getting my wife and daughter a bike. They have never ridden but I know they'll love it. Im looking forward to teaching them...I just cant decide on a good bike to last them. (either xr100, crf150 r maybe even a cr85).

Are there some pretty good riding places up your way? we plan on making many weekend trips up there to ride. All we have here is the Frances Marion forrest, which is very tight woods.

Not in the Columbia area. The closest are the NF in Whitmire and TNT in Chester. We do a lot of volunteer workdays with SCORE in the NF, especially Parson's Mt and Cedar Springs near Abbeville.
I bought the wife a TTR125L for Christmas and we're planning some trips to Durhamtown (GA), a nice NF up by Sylva, NC and a place called Coal Creek in TN.

You might want to check around like the other guy said. You can buy 03 CRs for $4,800 out the door around here all day long. The last 02 they had I should have bought. It went real low.

How excited is your daughter about a bike and what does she want? I posted in your other thread about my son and that's why I ask. Last year, he was 12 and started riding bikes for the first time. He wanted a CR really bad, but I felt it was too much for him to start out with. I told him that I would get him the XR100 and when he learned the clutch and shifting I would buy him the CR. Well that only lasted two months, bought the XR in April and a 2002 YZ85 in June that we got a good deal on. Kids learn real fast, so if she wants the CR now you may want to go ahead and get her that CR now and just have her start slow. It's a big jump from the XR to CR anyway so if thats what she wants you may save some money.

On the other hand, if you're the one wanting the CR for her to ride track with you then go with the XR and let her learn at her speed. Don't push her into something she doesn't want. She will lose interest quick if it's not the bike she wants.

She's pretty excited...so is my wife. They will both be learning, never ridden before. I was drawn to the CR because that is what I learned on and I have always had CR's. For them though, I may lean towards the CFR150 or the XR100. I don't want them to outgrow the bike too fast, but I also dont want to scare them away. I'm trying to figure out what would good for both of them. right now I am buying myself a CR250 and then a smaller bike for them to share and if it all goes well, another bike for them. I am excited about teaching them. Of course, I have some learning to do myself as I have not been riding for a few years. I hope the CR250 isnt too much for me. After my last long break from riding, I bought a cr125 and was just fine on it, so I think the 250 would be ok too...and last me a long time. Most of out riding will be woods, so I think they may be better off on a 4-stroker and not have to worry so much about keeping it revved and power bands and all that. I learned on 2-strokes and thats all I have ever ridden. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
I imagine a new cr250 runs quite different than a 9 year old 125. The 125 was ok in the woods but had to be revved like crazy, I hope the 250 has some more torque.

Trout - be prepared to go through jetting HELL with that 02 CR250.

I guarantee you will have issues with jetting. And when you ask for jetting help on that bike, you will get 10 different people that SWEAR by their jetting settings, and all 10 are totally different and possibly at the same sea level/air conditions.

The 02 CR 250 is not ported very good and jetting is a nightmare.

I am about to sell my 02 CR 250 for that reason and that reason alone. When it runs good, its the best bike I have had....thats only 2 months out of the year. I am sick of it. I have a bad full of main jets, pilot jets, every needle every made for that crappy mikuni, and even some nozzle jets.

Don't beleive me, do a search for 2002 CR 250 jetting on DRN, there is more info than there should be....

Just my opinion though.

Do yourself a favor and do not pay $5000 for this bike. The dealer is taking advantage.... big time! There are left over '03's going for $5000 in SE Pa. If you negotiate you can get that price out the door! The new ones will be out in 2 months & the prices should lower.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the Dealerships making a living. But you should pay what the market bears. Remember, every time that dealer has to send his floor plan payment he's losing $ if the bikes don't move. If you absolutely have to have the '02, he should sell it to you in the $4500 range tops!

Thanks. He claims he cant let the 02 go for less than $100 over invoice...which is ~4995, then theres tax and fees...grand total of around $5500!

another dealer wants 5499+tax for an 03. the dealers out here suck.
I am already approved through honda even...so he knows I'm good to go. I am buying TWO bikes together even. The cr and an xr100.

If you are qualified through Honda already I would call around to dealers within 100 miles or so of you. Get a quote from them. An 1.5 hour drive to save $500+ is worth it.

Call Service Honda and Honda East. They can ship you an 03 model for less than $5,500 and since they are Honda dealers can probably take your Honda credit. Now you knw why that clown has leftover 02's.

I had the same issue here, the dealers that had leftovers were the same ones trying to hit homeruns on every bike out the door.

Not only that but AJ at Service Honda can take care of the XR and the CR purchases at the same time.

I emailed sales at service honda. I'll see what they say.

I did call all the honda dealers around here...none of them even have a CR250 in stock. Perhaps service honda can take care of me.

I'll see how low he will go on friday- Im bringing my wife in to double check the xr and crf. She could probably get a better deal than me. She has no shame when it comes to dealing. I admire that.

Why don't you just drive the couple of hours and save thousands on 3 bikes? TO me, it's obvious, and being approved by Honda doesn't have anything to do with it. I agree with the other post, pay what the market nears. Don't be so excited that you get taken. Take the drive, but call first. It'll be worth it!! Think of all the gear you could by with what you save...

a bit of advice from a guy that works in sales:

the dealer is convinced he's got you by the sack.&nbsp; The last thing you want is for him to think you NEED the financing thru him.&nbsp; By the way, what about a bank?&nbsp; I just got 5%, payments are only $106/month.

Find a few good deals on e-bay, '03s go for 4500-4800 brand new so an '02 should be 4200-4500 (and probably tax-free).&nbsp; Even if you have no intention of buying from e-bay (I did), use this to negotiate.&nbsp; If he doesn't play ball, make sure he has your number, politely let him know you are pursuing other options and that he can call you if he changes his mind.

I'm all for supporting local dealers, but it's time for them to step up to the plate a bit.&nbsp; Don't expect him to come down to e-bay prices, but $5000 is just too much.

This is a lot more pleasant than the "I just bought a new CR250 for $6000 out the door, is that a good deal?" threads.&nbsp; Once the seal on the Vaseline jar has been broken, there's no use beating a guy up...

thanks for all the input guys. I think I will call him tomorrow and let him know that I am seeking other options...blah blah blah. Surely he will understand that he stands to miss out on selling TWO bikes. I dont mind paying the $2100 for the xr100 but he needs to do better on the CR250. You would think that if he has a customer at hand that is ready to roll and already finished the paperwork he would give in more. Surely he knows I'll be back about every week for fluids and parts too.

Also, he showed me the honda invoice that had $4995 and said that is what he has to pay Honda for it. Is that a load of sales crap?
Also is there any way around sales tax? Other fees?

Thanks for all your help y'all, I'm really not a baby. I'm just new to new bike purchasing and thought it would be similiar to a car purchase.

I think like a lot of other stuff, those invoices aren't anything more than a sales tool.
