Did I change fork oil correctly?

Got a '97 KDX 220. I changed fork oil today for the first time. I took the forks out of the triple clamps, removed the fork tube cap, unscrewed the cap from the spring rod, pulled the spacer and spring out and dumped the oil.

I pushed the spring rod all the way down and up a few times to make sure all oil drained out.

Then I added new oil. The spring rod stayed in during the add process. I measured down 85mm and sucked out the excess oil. Then I buttoned it all back up.

The spring rod didn't have to be removed...did it?

Only the spring needs to be removed. You are good to go!

Need to pump the damping rod a few times after you fill it to make sure you bleed the air out. The level can drop considerably as the air bleeds out.

You didn't mention that the fork was compressed when you added and measured the oil, but I assume it was, yes?
That would be less than interesting to ride? I was REALLY liking pulling the springs out, compressing the forks and checking it, if there are ANY doubts!
