Do small whips off jumps make a bike more stable?

A couple of times I have gotten sideways comming off somewhat small jumps. The jumps seem to be the ones that shoot you out more instead of up, like high speed jumps. I watched the expert class riders and they always seem to be throwing mini whips, like turning the front tire the opposite way really quick on a jump. I know sometimes they do this to scub hight off but it looked like they were doing it on almost every jump. Does this help with control of the bike?

I stay very close to the ground over jumps. Doesn't seem to make me any faster though!

Mini whips will help you stay low, but they don't do much for you on really small jumps. Some riders like to whip over everything as an expression of style or to intimidate other riders. It's the mx equivalent of a slam dunk.

I think my feet out, arms a flailing, going sideways off jumps intimidates riders behind me not to pass. :yikes:
