I had the pleasure of having someone plow into the back of me during a moto this Sunday and my back has been killing me ever since and I need some advice. Its my lower back that is hurting. My muscle pains that I usually get everyday after I race (I'll be 39 next month) are now gone but my back pain is still severe. It feels like a pinched nerve. If I sit long I cannot get out of my chair without pulling myself up. After I'm up I have to stand and stretch before I can walk. I have an important race coming this Sunday and my question is: Should I stretch or should I rest my back? Would 20 min heat then 20 min ice work on a pinched nerve? Should I hang upside down? Help. Thanks for any advice.:( :(

been there!

got any pain shooting up the back of your legs or any numbness any where? my back trouble comes from work not bikes! but after the best doc's have to offer and 16 weeks of P/T it comes down to strech, strech and more steching for me. mine was due to the bottom of my spine starting to fuse slightly because of lack of streching and movement in that part of the back, plus, my ligament are kinda tight from the "university strech";) but if you can afford it or have good insurance, go see you trusty back doc ! good luck.

Don't ride with a sore back. If you have a pinced nerve and it runs down your leg, see a doctor because you have a herniated disk. I had mine surgically repaired but sometimes they will shrink on their own. If anyone on this site want's more info on backs, etc. Go to spine-health.com and you can learn more. A simple gym routine...forget squats, will help alot, and you can pick up your bike off the trail floor with confidence.

Thanks for the replies. I did not race as I could not justify a more severe injury. I (thankfully) do not have any pains down my legs and I just hope I tore something. My back felt better this weekend however whenever I stepped out of my Honda today it was bad again. What exercises should I do to strengthen my lower back. I ride a MTB and do light weights however I think I don't do anything for the lower back, which is probably why my back is sore after races. Thanks.

What you describe sounds allot like the pain I had after a sticking throttle accident. My pain just went away but it took like 6 weeks before getting out of a chair didn't hurt anymore :( .

With general back pain (not necessarily related to an injury) I've had good luck with some of these.

I read somewhere that if you use a belt when lifting (thought to protect the lower back) you may actually be weakening those lower back muscles! Might want to try some lifting (lighter stuff) without the belt to help strengthen the lower back.

As far as healing up by the weekend--good luck! Sounds to me like you'll either have to bag it or tough it out. Might just be that you spent the day getting hammered by the track/trails and you're just stoved up.

If you're really worried, go see the doc.

what my doc's gave me.

the place was call the university of michigan sports medicine. the streching was very specialized to my injury. I had no pain runnig do my legs or any numbness any where. just real bad lower back pain.
1. they had me lay flat on my back and one leg at a time they streched the ligament on the back of my leg by raising it till my range on motion stopped and held it for five sec. rep of 5 three sets
2. laying flat on my back they had me push my spine flat to the floor, cruch my stomach then roll my hip back. 5 count rep of 5 three sets. this was the best by far!
3. laying flat on my back, they had me do stomach crunchers with out lifting my head off the flool. five count in a clock wise motion hit the clock at every quarter. three sets of five, this was a good one! really made my back fell great.
these are the only one's that I do too this day. they had about ten more butt I just can't rememeber them all ?
but like I said before, go see a real back doctor. then have him send you to a sports medicine physical therapist!!!!!!!!!!!!! they do majic
