A new guy joined us this week, DRN's own James. James is a good guy who has only raced once before Saturday night. He and I signed up for the 250D and the +30c/d class. I figured it would be ok not to run +25c/d and give up my lapper award this week to someone else.

More on James later :)

Wrench signed up for 250D and his customary +35 class.

The 250D heat was the 3rd race and there was about 16 people on the line. It looked like a few new faces were there. "Sandbaggers" was my first thought. However, I then thought better about it and realized that the "sandbaggers wouldn't show up until the main."

I got a horrible start. I was one of the last 3 to the first turn. Later James told me he was up there with me on the start and he felt he was in last place off the start b/c he let everyone else go.

I passed a few people and was making some good time. In one spot I passed 2 guys who went high and I went inside. It was a really cool pass. I had the clutch working and the tire hooked up just right. It was the first time I felt like I actually carried a little momentum through the turn.

In the +30c/d class I had a lot of fun. I battled with a couple guys near the back of the pack and learned a little about carrying my speed as I tried to keep with them.

Now on to the main.

I ligned up in 250D about 5 spaces to the left of where I normally line up. I figured part of my starting problem is so many people are now going wide on the start that when everyone is to my left and I don't get out in front of them I end up being passed by the whole class on the inside. This time there were 19 of us on the gate. Yep, 3 sandbaggers had joined the fray.

The gate drops and I knew I had a decent start. I think I was 9th or 10th after the first turn. I wasn't any faster off the gate but my gate position was a much better one than the outside I usually take.

I passed a couple guys in the whoops. A couple of guys fell and I was whoopoing and hollering all the way around the track. I had 2 guys closing in on me on the 3rd lap and there was one guy who was just a tad faster than me who I was battling with. I took every line the faster guy did not take. I tried hard to match his speed but couldn't overall. He'd always gap me in the whoops but not enough to provide a line for a pass between us. By taking the opposite line of the faster rider he and I blocked the track and didn't have to worry about the pressure behind us.

I then tried to catch the faster guy on the last lap. I was exhausted but gave it a handful of throttle. I had no pre-loading going on at all but the bike doubled itself all the way through and it was the smoothest I've ever went through the whoops and the fastest b/c it brought me up to the rear tire of the faster guy.

He held me off and after a few more turns everyone settled into their finishing positions. I ended up with a hard fought 8th out of 19 and was really happy. Wrench got 13th and James finished 16th. They trophied 10 places.

In the +30c/d James and I took off the line side by side. We were hollering at each other and whooping it up. He then stalled on a corner and I was gone... for a little while.

I wanted to keep up with the pack so I decided I'd shift to third over the jump that is right after the start. I made the shift, landed and held on the gas. I went around the right hander and there is a small bump/table top/speed scrubber right after it.

My rear wheel stepped out on me as I went around the curve and up the speed scrubber. I then did a perfect low side slide in the middle of the track!

Luckily the bike didn't stall but James caught me and was hollering "pick it up, pick it up" as he passed me <g>

The bike didn't stall so I picked it up and tried to catch him but he was already too far ahead by the time I got going. James beat me and I took the final position over the line. However, even though I had a nice rug burn on my arm and shoulder with a good bump/bruise on the ball of my shoulder I really enjoyed that race.

I am happy for my knee braces today. When I went down my right leg was pinned under the bike as I slid and there are no abrasions or anything on my leg as the pants and braces did their job of protecting my leg.

In +35 Wrench got a bad start but battled hard and passed 2 guys on the first lap. He fought harder than I've ever seen him fight before and kept the two guys at bay until the last lap. He was a little slower through the whoops than the two behind him but he was making good line choices and was on the gas harder out of the turns.

He was also jumping a lot better than I've seen him do before.

On the last lap one of the guys behind him slid out where I did but hurt himself pretty good. Then 4 turns before the finish 2 other went down and Wrench was able to use them as a buffer for #12 who was right on him. He passed them and took the inside line so #12 couldn't get around. He finished the race on the gas and in 4th!! His first trophy at JMX.

Way to go Wrench!

Overall it was a fun night and James is a really cool guy who is fun to race and ride with. Next week is Top Gun and I am hoping he makes it.

Nice report! And I thought I was the only true D class rider on DRN! :D If your talking about Top Gun at Muddy Creek, that is one rough track, or at least it used to be. I entered the 30+C class there in '96. It was my first real MX race and I was on the '89 CR250. That's when I learned to stay out of those 'age' classes, just a bunch of old pros. Needless to say, I was pathetic. The guy who won the class was an old pro rider who hadn't ridden in a couple years so he thought that made him a C rider, yeah right. Muddy Creek is about 2 miles long with huge ruts and breaking/acceleration bumps everywhere. A constant beating, especially on an '89CR  Top Gun is definately full of sandbaggers in every amateur class. I'm still a D rider mainly because I almost pass out after 1 lap plus, I'm still pathetic.

The highlight of the evening for me was definitely the 30+ main. I will be the first to say that I didn't "kick butt". I can't tell if Ivan was hanging around back there to encourage me or whether this is some plot by he and Wrench to lure me into wagering. He easily had me beat after I stalled it. I'm guessing the only reason I ever caught him was that he was pushing the envelope while I was in cruise mode. You can gain a lot of time on a guy who has to drag his leg out from under his bike and get it started again. In any case, it was good to see the Spode back on two wheels as it didn't look like a smooth transition to the turf. The other scary moment was when this yellow blur from the Unlimited amatuer class, or whatever that class was that lapped me, about took my front wheel out. I thought I was giving them enough room by riding up on the berm but this guy needed the whole track to make his turns. :moon:

Wrench ran a great race in the 35+ and it was exciting to see him battle it out with some guy on a Kawasaki. I was very tempted to kick him a few times while he lay exhausted on the trailer afterwards...but then I got distracted. Another memorable moment was my first attempt at the backflip. Unfortunately, Ivan and Wrench didn't get to witness it but I know of at least one flagman who saw it (I passed real close by him on the way to crashing into the fence). I have a hard time jumping in second gear....too much torque!!

I definitely had a great time!! Ivan and Wrench are excellent racing buddies although I couldn't determine whether Wrench actually wanted me to run him over or if these were just thinly veiled threats to psyche me out. Ivan is the only guy I have met thus far who considers "hollering and whooping it up" :scream: essential components of racing.?!?! It does take some of the edge off of it because instead of thinking "is my weight far enough forward for this jump?" I am thinking "what did he just say??"

Looking forward to Top Gun but I went down pretty hard today at TNT so I'm hoping this fat knee doesn't interfere too much. :whiner:

Maybe I can talk Lori into Top Gun.... :)

Woods track. I blasted through the whoop section out of control, went round the turn out of control, got it straigtened out to hit the tabletop and thought all was good...then the next thing I know...I got slammed into the dirt head/elbow first. I don't even remember hitting/twisting my knee. Guess the front wheel got all caught up in that thick dry sandy dirt.

OH HELL YEAH.... lets get a gang up for Top Gun. This sounds like a great thing.

Top Gun is (I think) $25 for the first class and $20 for the second. $10 gate fee.

There is nothing too dangerous on the track. The two triples are made where you can easily double them and if you over jump the face of the third hump is very easy on the bike. It is almost like a double to a table top where the table top has a *slight* dip in it.

It is in Lincolnton, NC.

Top Gun is located behind AL Lane's Kawasaki/Yamaha on hwy. 27 south of Lincolnton, NC. From Charlotte take 27 North (Freedom drive). From I-85 or Hickory take hwy 321 to Hwy 27 and go south 2 or 3 miles. Al Lane's will be on the right. Enter through the shop parking lot. Pit bike rules will be in affect.

This should be a lot of fun.

I'm running 250D and +30c/d again. Gomer? You up for some +30c/d whoopin and hollerin? We could sandwich James in the middle :p

Gomer, I hope you can make it. It would be really cool seeing Danny race again.

SOLO, if Danny races you can race with him or lie and say you have a 133 so you can enter the 250D class. When you beat me I'll protest :p

I hope we can make this a fun get together.

So it looks like it is near either Goodsonville, Iron Station, or Boger City . :silly: I love it! So what time do the practices start before the race. Are we racing this Sat. or Sunday? If it's Saturday, is there any place in Boger City to stay the night? :)

There are hotels around but I'm not familiar enough to say where. I remember them saying it was in Iron Station.

The race is Saturday night. Practice starts at 5pm. Racing at 7pm.

It is a SX format. You race one heat to qualify for gate position and race the main for awards/position.

I am hoping to get there before 3pm but that depends on when Wrench gets to my place on Saturday. We need to have someone get there relatively early to save a parking spot for everyone (rope it off or something).

Anyone volunteer?

Last time Wrench and I parked up near the concession stand where there was a bleacher. After you get in you go by some storage building and we took a right and went back up the otherside of the storage buildings and parked there.

Lined up for my first main ... actually rode fast enough to be considered racing .... got some pointers from Billy .... lined up for my second main ..... Rode my grapes off!! Got my FIRST TROPHY of the year!!!!!!!!!! 4th place overall is pretty cool!!! :aj:

Somewhere along the line Ivan tried to steal 2nd turn and was proclaimed "SAFE"!!!!!
