For any nutritionist or diet expert out there: Lately I've been eating hard boiled eggs for protein. I know that the egg whites are high in protein, but are the egg yokes high also. They must have some protein in them but is it worth eating all the cholesterol they also contain to get that protein? This has been on my mind since I set about trying to eat as healthy as possible and any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
hebegebes,Im no expert but I play one on the internet.;) I can tell you that a large egg has about 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat.ALL of the fat is in the yoke and over half the protein(about 3 1/2 grams)is in the whites.I usually scramble mine up with about 6 whites and leave 2 yokes in it.This way you get a good amount of protein without all the fat and cholesterol.
I think it's important to explain that of the 5 grams of fat that TT is talking about only 1.5 grams are saturated fats , the other 3.5 grams are usefull fats especially when you are on reduced calories and trying to train hard.
IMHO egg yokes have gotten an undeserved bad rap for a long time. :)
Rich,You brought up a good point about the yoke being low in saturated fat and you're probably right about yokes getting a bum rap.OK I'll admit im still a little "brainwashed" from all the 1980's studies that made egg yokes out to be Satan himself.
Given how useful saturated fat can be as an energy source when training hard (or reducing calories) the little bit that is in an egg yoke doesn't seem worth avoiding. When you consider how much better the protein quality is with the yoke as opposed to just the whites (not to mention the taste) it's a no-brainer. Needless to say I eat all the yokes :D
For you naysayers out there I eat a lot of whole eggs and my blood cholesterol stays in the 120-135 range depending on my body weight (215-235) and my triglycerides are in the low to mid 30s. I may die (to the delight of many) but it sure as hell won't be from eating egg yokes. :)
