Need a place to vent off some stress and this be it.

Long story short, my wife's grandfather lived in Anza, 40 miles East of Temecula. He's 84 years old, just a bit less than 89er and had a care taker taking advantage of his finances and home. She got back into drugs and thats when it went downhill. She'd leave him for days at a time, no food or medications or anything. The finances are such a mess that we've spent the last week getting them back in order.

On Sunday, we moved him in with us because he doesn't trust his own daughter or husband, nice. They think he's loaded and want his money and he really only has his property he owns outright. Sad to see and pisses me off to hear what they were and weren't doing for him out there. He wanted us to take control of everything for him, finances, medical, the whole ball of wax, which we gladly did. I've taken the last 3 days off from work to get him situated here in the house and spent most of it on the phone for him to close accounts, open new ones and check his credit situation.

He's a great man but he can't see or hear very well which makes him so vulnerable to people that want to take advantage of him. He really likes being here and finding his likes and dislikes is a daily chore. I asked him what he liked to eat and he said he can't remember, he was only fed corndogs for the last 6 months. :| That's horse****!

Just needed to vent and fill the family in on what is going on in the Elk house. DW is still on, I'll really need it by then. If I'm not as visible here, you'll know why. Aloha

whoa, sounds like you've got your hands full. hats off to you for steppin up and taking care of him before the situation got worse.I'm glad he's ok. is something going on with the former care taker (like prosecution) I wish you luck.
and PLEASE enjoy him. I would kill for just 1 more minute with either of my grandfathers.

That's some tough news Elk. I can't stand it when I hear how the elderly are taken advantage of it breaks my heart. My mom and dad have taken care of numerous elderly relatives over the years. Great Aunts, Grandparents, Family Friends. You would be surprised at how many people are out there trying to take advantage and all they are really interested in is MONEY!! Some of their own flesh and blood. I'm really proud of my parents for being the Rocks of the family. You are doing the right thing and you will be blessed later in life for your actions.

Unfortunately there are too many stories like that. Especially involving the elderly.
My wife's grandfather was fleeced for thousands, for what he thought was charity. This all took place over the phone with a telemarketer. When my father-in-law got wind of this, he investigated the situation and found out that some "wheeler-dealer" with a Beverly Hills address was scamming people all over the country. And the majority of these poor people were elderly persons, who just thought they were doing the right thing by donating dollars to a good cause.

Kudos to both you and your wife Carlo.

If you need any info on modifications etc. give me a shout. I have done a fair amount of elderly housing and spend some part of almost every day answering some question about the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Its good that you took him in and are taking care of him now. We moved my grandparents in with my parents several months ago and they are happier than they have been in a long time. Of course grandpa is back in the hospital for while to build his strength back up but seems to be doing fine. There will be quite afew adjustments the first month or two but things will settle down. My grandparents drove my parents nuts the first month but now they are all in a nice routine that everyone can get along with. Goodluck and vent away!

Props to you, Carlo! As my Dad gets older, I've tried to pay more attention to his likes and dislikes. Trying to also get a handle of medical needs and such. He is still independent but there may be a day when that won't be the case. I hope that you have no court battles with relatives over his finances or property so I suggest you consult an attorney on guardianship. This may be/seem premature or selfish but you have already witnessed the bad behavior and should expect it to reoccur.

Hey bud I feel for ya. I have a similar situation with my wife's grandfather. My mother-in-law set up an irrevocable trust with his money and her as the bennificiuary and then moved to Florida. We have been doing what we can to help him with medical, bills, etc. And if that's not bad enough she got into her uncle's will and then deserted him too. A real piece of work, she is.

Hang in there and vent as required :)

What do you guys think about him doing some swimming for exercise? No, not just push him in for God's sake, maybe letting him float around though?? I need some ideas of what is good, he's got a pacemaker but in good health otherwise.

I hope everyone is settling in and finding their (new) place in your home. It will be an adjustment for everyone, but worth it in the end. I fear getting old and hope there are people to take care of me if I'm ever in the situation your wifes grand daddy was in.

I checked with my nurse and she said it would be good for him. Low impact resistance type exercise or sumtin' like that.

You could strap a couple of those pool brushes on his feet and kill two birds with one stone. :rotfl:
