While getting my bke ready for a trip to Colorado, I found out that I was missing the 2 O-rings from the exhust. How important are those and would I have caused any damage without them for the last year.

I doubt you did any damage except for the drooling mess down the front of the cylinder. However, since the pipe is a tuned piece, it will probably run much better with a tight seal.
Don't forget the copper seat and use plenty of hi-temp(read red)silicone.

I haven't been using the silicone. Is really necessary to get it to seal? I guess i could soap test it while it's running. Have you guys been having problems with just the O rings?

2 o-rings and a new copper gasket whenever I take the pipe off, thier cheap enough. Never had a need for silicone, no leaks.
