She was going to her mother's house for post-op care. I hope she checks in soon--I'd like to know how it went.

Hello, and thank you all for your concern. I am indeed at my mother's house enjoying the effects of the painkillers. :eek: Due to the completely uncomfortable sitting position at the computer, and Mom's ancient machine and dial-up connection, I won't post much until I go home.

Anyway, the surgery went well. Turns out I tore the MCL and the meniscus as well as the ACL so I did a pretty good job in there. They did a nerve block which is just now starting to wear off, so the pain hasn't been bad yet, with one exception. I didn't set an alarm to take pills so my medication lapsed, resulting in nauseating pain. I learned that lesson well and will be setting alarms tonight. My first PT appointment is Monday. I have pictures I will scan when I return.

This sucks and I would not recommend it to anyone!!! I hate it! I hurt and I ache and I am sore. The painkillers are not fun since I do not enjoy the floaty feeling and inability to focus my eyes on anything (typing is a chore.) None of the other side effects are much fun either. I've been dozing on and off for 24 hours and my back and neck are stiff too. But I have received flowers from concerned friends, so that helps. I am grumpy.

So there's the first progress report. I am sure all the pain and discomfort is only beginning. :mad:

Good to hear from you! I know the feeling -- If I'd had internet when I had my knee surgery, I wouldn't have even thought about going online for at least a week! You're a real trouper! :)

Hang in there. If you stay on top of the physical therapy, it'll be better than new.

Plus, you should rate some new knee braces out of this :D

Just wait till PT on Monday. You thought getting up on the crutches was bad.... Seriously, glad to hear it went well. It's cool when they remove the staples:) Didn't hurt at all. Make sure you get a disabled parking permit ASAP.

Having just been there, I found it impossible to be positive thru the pain, probably evidenced by some of my posts over the last couple weeks :silly:. I won't bore anyone with the details except to say part of my collarbone was trying to break thru the skin which was giving me constant pain. All gone now :). My adivce would be to try to stay as positive as you can, ie be with the right people, take the pills and do what the doc says. Good luck!

I'm right now 1 week post-op from my ACL and MCL surgery. Luckily they only had to fix my ACL and my MCL will supposedly heal on its own. Good luck with your recovery Sharla!:D

FC22-- Glad you are through the drilling and cutting... now cowboy (or girl) up and start PT like an insane person. Pain truly is weakness leaving the body. Learn it, live it, love it and the easy days become yesterdays.

Thanks again everybody. A new pair of knee braces are definitely on the list--gotta protect my new bionic knee! The nerve block is wearing off today so that was uncomfortable. As soon as I have feeling in my leg again, they want me to put weight on it. :eek: Not sure I'm looking forward to that. I got lots of visits from friends although I was drifting in the middle of a conversation . . . my eyes keep trying to cross. Darn these drugs anyway.

I keep thinking of all the things I can do again late spring 2002 and am alternately angry, depressed, rueful and hopeful. This isn't too bad right now. I know the severe depression sets in later. Plus the usual seasonal depressive disorder or whatever it is about Seattle winters that makes everybody want to jump off the bridge. At least my status as a partial cripple will prevent me from doing that.

I just read Kim's article . . . Thanks, Kim!! While my coolness factor is definitely questionable, your article was up to its usual standards. Thank you.

You'll be back to your normal activities before you know it. No need to worry about depression. Think of it this way - at least now your knee won't give out and cause you hit the ground like a sack of potatoes. I rode ~4 months after surgery - a little too soon. Give it 5-6 months before you get back on the bike.

Good luck at PT tomorrow. Just think - you're paying to be treated like that:p

I did in fact fall off my pumpkin. It doesn't seem to like me very much.

8/4--Toasted Hare Scramble--crashed in a rooty off-camber downhill, tore MCL.

9/15--Trail riding at Gold Bar, looped out, tore ACL.

10/8--test riding the CRF 450R--pivoted on left knee to swing right knee over seat--tore meniscus cartilage.

Triple whammy. Surgery 10/31, and now I'm on the long road to recovery. I can't say I like it nor has it improved my character any.

FC22 - So how's the knee?
