I finally found a bike with-in my budget. 2006 yz450f for $2400. Now I need to know how much noise is considered normal? Listening to engine you hear a rattle at idle like piston slapping cylinder wall and when you rev engine a little higher it goes away is this normal? Will probably tear apart and do PM but just wanted to know if anyone else with similar bike has same sound.

I have an 03' yz450f. I bought it new. It has had a lower end rattle since day one. Almost sounds like a rod bearing. If there is no metal in the oil filter after running it for a bit, I wouldn't be to concerned. They have a normal knock to them.

Spend the plastic money on gaskets so you can tear it down and measure everything. A 2400 dollar 06 450 will probly need some work, no matter what the Craigslist ad says......

Excellent idea.

It's better to know for sure what is causing the noise rather than taking a chance on your 2400 dollar 450 becoming a 4400 dollar 450. If it is a worn piston, the skirt of the piston can break and cause many dollars worth of damage to your engine. It would also be a good time to check your valve train and crankshaft.
