1) your physical size 6' 180lb
2) How physical / aggressive are you? on a scale of 1-10 I'd say a 6
3) what do you plan to ride- MX/SX tracks, woods, fields with friends or ????? woods, fields, and logging roads with friends
4) Do you have any riding experience? I've ridden four wheelers all my life
5) Do you think you will race ? no
6) Are you mechanically inclined and will you be doing your own bike work? basic stuff
7) Do YOU have a preferance to a brand/ motor choice (2 or 4 stroke)? I don't have a preference yet
8) Do you have a dealer close by your home that you might use and what brand(s) does he carry? honda, yamaha, and kawasaki
9) How much ($) do you plan to spend on a bike? trying to limit it to around 1000
10) Do you live in California? no, Texas
11) Your age? 17
12) anything else that you think would help form an opinion
Seeing as this will be my first bike, I'm looking for something that I can take things slowly and learn how to ride on.

Get a 4 stroke. Try the CRF250F, or maybe something a bit larger?

did you mean the crf250r or x?

he wants to keep the bike under a 1000.00 bucks. and he only wants to do basic maintenance. a used racing 4 stroke for a 1000 dollars would most likely need alot of work. and would require more attention then a 2 stroke. at your size i would say a 250 2 stroke, a 125 will have alot less power and be easy to learn on though. you could look at xr250's and xr400's.
they wont require as much maintenance as a racing four stroke and they are really reliable tough four stroke trail bikes.

I think for that kind of money, an older trail oriented 250 2 stroke would be great. Yamaha WR250 1990-97, Suzuki RMX250 in the early-mid 90s, KTM 250 or 200EXC. Maybe even a 1990's KDX200 or KDX250.
