Well, here it goes.

Ok, so about two weeks ago I finally sent my suspension out to be revalved. I was real excited bacause this was the first bike I was ever going to have revalved. So I go to Sports Authority and buy a shotgun case and over to Office Depot for bubble wrap to send out my suspension in. So I box up my suspension and go to the UPS store for shipping. The guy rings up the price and comes back with $80 to ship it from NY to PA! I asked him why it was so much and he said that in order for me to put insurance on my suspension, it has to be mailed in their box! So my bubble wrapped suspension in an eggcrate lined hard plastic shotgun case got put into another box to be shipped.

So I talked to my suspension guy and he said that he should be able to have it back to me in two weeks(that two weeks being today), which was what I was hoping for. So I talk to him on wednesday and he had shipped it out UPS on the 4:00 truck. Return shipping was only $30 :debil: . So now I'm really getting excited because this weekend is opening weekend at our local track here. So now it's thursday and I check the tracking number at the UPS website and it says that the package was delivered to somewhere in PA. Now i'm worried that my brand new suspension is sitting on someones porch in Penn. I call up UPS and there was a mix up at the shipping plant but my box is definatly on it's way BUT IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO GET HERE TILL MONDAY!!! :whiner: :whiner: :whiner: I'm hoping that i can go and pick it up at the shipping station near me instead of waiting till monday so there is still some hope.

Also, this being opening weekend and all and my Tech 8's being over 3 years old and falling apart, I decide to order a new pair of Sidi Force SRS boots. I put in the order last week in hopes of having it for this weekend. So the box comes last night and I'm excited once again after hearing about my suspension problem. So I open to box to find that they sent the wrong color and it wasn't the SRS version either! So I call them up and they will send me the right boot after I return it but they are in Cali and i'm in NY. It's 5 days shipping both ways so that would mean another 2 weeks i would have to wait for my boots!

So after all of this, I decided to go up to the bar to meet some friends and play some fooseball. For the first time in a while, my birthday falls on a friday, next friday. I asked everone if they wanted to go to Atlantic City for my birthday to do some gambling....So...accordingly for the day, they all bitch and moan about not having and money, or not wanting to drive and blah blah blah....

So as a final last ditch effort to do something fun, I try to get them to come to happy hour after work today. You would have thought that I asked them to help me move with the excuses they were comming up with.

Ok, I'm done.....for now.

I sent mine in what sounds like the exact same way you did:

Gun Case

They shipped the suspension in the gun case to Drew Smith at W.E.R. Racing (east coast) for about $30. The difference may be that I went to one of the St. Louis area "Service Centers" (there's only two around here), rather than a UPS "store" location (there's a bunch of them around here). The only thing I can think of is that the "store" is more like a Mailboxes Etc that charges up the @ss, versus the Service Center which is where the local packages all flow through eventually. I also wrapped the gun case very tightly with duct tape and a zillion zip-ties (Drew probably had fun getting it open)...I assume you did this, too (not that it makes any difference, maybe).

Next time, if there's a service center close by, maybe you won't get jerked around. Sorry to hear about your experience with UPS and the other stuff. Hey, it's Friday...be happy!

Casper.

It may take a little longer on that cake. Like I said it was a pretty good party and there was lots of libations. Maybe too many.

Anyway, the person in charge of boxing up your cake and taking it to UPS, forgot to blow out the candles. You may have read about that big UPS warehouse fire here in our area. :flame:

We will have to re ship it. Should be there by your next birthday.

We hope you get this message cause the internet is down for a week, should come up right after your B-day, but by God, you have a great Burpday, and celebrate with all your friends down in Kentucky. While you head over to Atlantic City, they will all be in Kentucky cause the message you sent was delayed due to it going through Bali and then Mexicali. Actually, forget everything written here cause by the time you see it, it'll be Easter. Happy Easter!

As far as packaging and shipping, I ordered a heavy duty box from MX-Tech for $7.50, and shipped via USPS for $17 (with insurance) from Detroit to Illinois.

The box has been reused a few times, and I'm sure it's nowhere near as strong as a gun case. But with either box or gun case, it shouldn't have cost $80 to ship. For that price I'd find a good local tuner instead.

The whole "UPS Store" is a complete fricking joke that does nothing but mislead the consumer. Mail Boxes Etc. licensed the name and logo from UPS and switched their store names to "The UPS Store."

However, they really are a service company and charge roughly double of what the actual UPS shipping rates are. I worked at an MBE a number of years back and they charged double UPS rates back then.

For UPS shipping, you should always go to the real UPS service center with real UPS service employees.

Everything happens for a reason?

Well, there has been a twist to this story for the better. Because my bike wasn't ready for the weekend, I went out to a bar saturday night. I ended up meeting a really good looking girl. You know when you see a a couple and say to yourself, "what's a girl like that doing with a guy like him?" Well, I was that guy.

But it crossed my mind that if my suspension had gotten to me on time(friday), then I would have been riding on Sunday, and that would mean that i wouldn't have gone out on Saturday night and I would have never met this girl. Could this be fate?

Oh well, it's monday now.......

Actually, the UPS stores now have the same rates as the UPS customer counters. I shipped my supsension to Illinois (insured for $2500) for $38, in my own box. The good thing about going to the UPS customer counter is that they inspect the packing, which helps if you end up with a claim. Most claims that are declined are a result of poor packing. By going through an actual UPS customer counter, they inspect the packaging, which takes that excuse away.

Well I work at the UPS Store in Cincinnati, Ohio, I've been here for 1.5 years. I would have to say that when we were mailboxes we were a joke. High up charges and no customers b/c no-one knew the name. Now its diff. though. We have counter rates and it shows in the way that the customers pile in. But my main point is there are bad apples in every bunch just like anything else. Some people care about their job and try to do their best at it( me!) while others are just there b/c its a job. Dont judge them all on one experience. Keep in mind too that companies with ups accounts get charged less for shipping b/c they do alot of it than the average joe that goes to a hub station to ship. As for the shotgun case versus the box. A typical box runs like 5-8 dollars while there is a non standard box fee that will run you 10 dollars for keeping it in that shotgun case so............

Peace,
Rob

I've found FedEx to be a lot cheaper for oversized items. I had to ship a pair of rubicon fenders and ups was going to charge $102. FedEx only needed $45 and that included insurance! No need to think twice about which one to choose but I was curious as to why there was such a difference.
