Just read in the may issue of MotoCross Action that it is not a good idea to grease the lip of the air filter.. Ive always greased mine, does anybody leave theirs not greased??
Thanks,
Rick

I don't grease mine. There is enough filter oil in the lip of the filter and the basket is clamped against the air box so nothing is going to get through. Adding grease just makes a mess and there is no value added.

On the new Hondas the basket doesn't seal right so you either need to grease the heck out of it or fix the problem.

i guess if some of the grease finds you air jets it may be a problem. i don't use grease because i do like RM guys says -'use heaps of oil around the seal'. what does you filter manufacturer recommend? that may be a good starting point.
what has always worried me is the use of petrolum based greases, because everyone has them at home. i always had the feeling that they may damage the filter seal, and that's no good. lithium soap base grease is usally recommended in your manual, so i guess you should buy this if you want to use grease.

I don't grease...I haven't had any problems, and it saves some mess. BTW I bought PJ1 filter oil and it seems like good stuff. Really sticky, sprays well, and it has a bold color.

One more vote for no grease. This is a old school technique. The filters are much better quality and seal up alot better now than they did in the old days. Really no need for it.

I've always greased my filters just to be on the safe side . You might consider the Pro-Seal form PC racing . It is roughly a 1/4 inch neoprene seal that mounts to the air-box that eliminates the need for grease. I just installed one on my bike and like the way it works. I ended up using a rubber adhesive to install it since the adhesive they use is no better than the adhesive on a postage stamp!!

I know the Honda service manual for my cr250 says to grease the rim using honda white lithium or equivalent. White lithium grease is in a spray can and isnt very messy at all and it works good.

Every filter I have seen says to put grease around the rim. They even do it from the factory.

One bad seal and there goes a total engine rebuild.

And this would be the same factory that greases the bearings so well

The only reason to need grease is if the basket does not clamp on the filter lip well enough or if you hastily install the filter and the lip slips off of the basket.

I used to be a greaser but saw the light ;)

Yeah RM, I saw the same factory greasing when I pulled my bike apart yesterday. What a great job!! I guess since they don't cook with it, then they shouldn't use it anywhere else. :)

Ok, but have you ever traced a DNF that was caused by NOT greasing the filter, where the filter has been correctly oiled and installed? I use gease anyway, but I am curious if this has ever happened....

good question. i think that it defeats the purpose of using grease. the spray on stuff will just sink into the foam. you are better off using extra filter oil here. the solid grease, out of a can is the best stuff i think. when applied, it will form a layer ontop of the filter seal, not in it.

I hate to be the one to say this but i havnt greased a filter rim in nearly 15 years and i have never once had dirt come by a filter.I never change the filter on dusty meetings either as i think you risk damage if you drop dirt into the boot when installing.

Thank You :)

To everyone else. Grease if you want to but you're wasting your time.

I haven't greased mine, ever, and have never had a problem with dirt in the carb. Each time I take it apart, it's clean. When I spary the filter oil on it, I just shoot a single shot around the rim, lightly, and it's fine. Elk Jr. did his filter and unfortunately, he used just a little too much (he thought the more the better), and it dripped down the rear linkage. He thought his shock blew out! It really doesn't take much and too much will kill your air flow.

Right. You can't squeeze out too much oil. I even use a lint free rag or a second clean and ready to oil filter to absorb any excess.

I is important to make sure the filter is total saturated before squeezing out the excess oil. I tend to stay away from the spray stuff because it seems like you're using too much oil when you actually may not be getting enough on to throughly oil the foam.

I use the spray cause I'm lazy! Plain and simple, and the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.:D

the white lithiem grease isnt spray it is in a tube and needs to be squeezed out. it wont sink into the filter foam but i asked this bec if during the summer when the grease heated up i wnodered if it could drip but i doubt it will happen.
