Handle Bar Decision

Alright I recently graduated from 8th grade. It doesn't seem like a big deal to me but to others it does. Oh well. As a gift(s) I was given various amounts of moolah equallying (sp?) $150 dollars.

Now, at rockymountainatv.com I can get a new Maxxcross IT rear tire and a new set of Pro-Tapers for my bike, I can get these items for around 120 dollars. Shipping excluded.

So here my size comes into play, I am 6'3" so I am wondering if the Universal High Bends are then ones for me. Currently I am finding myself slouching on my bike. Yet I can't seem to fing what bend my current Pro-Tapers are. I can also not find the difference in height between the bars. My bike is also a 99' YZ 125 Stock seat foam and pegs. Would the high bends be too high?

Any input whatsoever appreciated.

i am 6'2" and just put the windam bend protpers on my YZ (reasonably high and not too much pull back), they feel very good but i havent riden on them yet! be careful with some taller bars (eg button) since they have a lot of pulback and i believe these will move your elbows in.

also, these bars were etched with the bend type, so i would expect if you remove the left grip you will find what bend they are!

but if you are tall on a yz you can drop your pegs very easily, i couldnt believe how much better it felt! do a search, there are several threads on how to do this.

If you're going with Pro Tapers, you might try the Pastrana bend. He is also 6'3 if I am not mistaken, and as far as I know they are the tallest bar on the market with less sweep than Tag's CR double-Hi.

Cam, i also looked into the pastrana bends and there are two listed on protaper website. the pastrana MX bend is similar to the RM low and does not have very much height, but there is also a pastrana FMX bend...this one is very high but also very narrow so it might not work out for general riding applications.

the windam is a similar dimensions to the carmicheal renthal bend and ive seen a lot of people suggest that bar for taller riders (ironically!)....maybe 326mx could look into a cheaper renthal fat bar in this bend?

i also saw another manufacturer with a windam bend, but it was drastically different to the dimensions of the protapers.

326: best bet is, take of the grip and measure the bars you have and go from there!

Yah, but I think I really want to stay with Pro-Taper. They have been the strongest bars I've ever used. They went thru about 10 real bad bar draggin crashes, used. I think the Windams are the ones for me! But still any other bar bends and/or brands will be considered seriously.

Thanks for the links but, I think if anything I should get the lowboy pegs and new bars. The reason I keep insisting on bars is cause my current Tapers are bent. But now I am considering the Carmicheal Fatboy, Also anyone have any info on the McGrath Fatbars?

I really appeciate all the help but still any more ideas would be helpful.

I bought Moose Fat bars in a CR-High bend and used Pro Taper's Universal mount kit on the stock clamp. Raised the bar height at least 4 inches from the original low YZ bend. I've crashed a couple of times, but no bendage yet.

What I did when I first got my bike was buy different bends in carbon steel ($10-15), and when I bent those (one or two crashes) I'd buy a different bend in carbon steel again, until I found the bend that works for me...then I bought aluminum, and havn't bent them yet (2+ years).

I'm 6'2", and I use the CR hi. I cut them down (32" to about 30.5") for enduro riding, and for proper bark buster fitting...it's been a flawless set-up for me.

I'm 6'4", and I would strongly recomend installing tall seat foam rather than lowering your pegs. Tall seat foam opens up the cockpit nicely. By loweing your pegs, you run the risk of dragging them in deep rutted corners, jump landings, etc. My bike is much easier to ride with the tall foam. I also went with an Applied triple clamp which allowed a more forward bar position and I use Tag's X5 bar with the SX bend. In all it's a very roomy setup.

ive just done the tall seat foam also and i cant wait to try it this weekend. lowering the pegs really worked out for me, and since it is only 10-15 mm i am not that overly concernedd with dragging a peg. i think i have very long shins, since even with the lowered pegs me knees were much above the seat!
to me its all about comprimise and it feels so much better all of the time, but i hope those few occasions when i drag a peg dont bite me back!
