I understand the points and will say either James had nothing for RC in the second moto, or he and his camp made what could prove to be a very costly mistake.

Thats what I thought, so the motos are scored independent of each other (like different races), so it wouldn't be too smart to "let" someone else win, because you won the weekend?

"Let" is a little strong? 8 seconds on the first lap? I'd guess that if within the first couple of laps if he could reel him him, he would have raced, but the real goal was probably to finish a damn national on two wheels, in the mud and not throw away the OA... thus fueling the internet rampage, lol.

RC plays it safe for the entire second half of the SX season and it was smart.

I think due to the track condition and the fact that Ricky already had the advantage of a great start, it was a smart move to ride conservative with a 47 point advantage over Ricky's 45, and not risk a crash trying to catch Ricky.

There was something to be gained when RC played it safe. He was in the lead and was trying to protect the championship, even then that approach almost cost him when things didn't go quite as planned. And for the record I think there was a lot less protect mode this year and more he just didn't have enough for James indoors.

I don't for a second think RC had James covered by 45 seconds, I just don't understand why James would let him go without trying? James was 16 or more seconds back with less than a half a moto to go and kept trying to catch Reed until he did, why? likely because he knew he could. Yes James won moto one, sounds like a great battle was had until RC had to toss his googles and at that point he pretty much had to concede his finish.

Like I said it just seems like they were so focused on the smaller picture (the OA) that he and his team lost site of the big picture. Either way it looks like we are in for some great battles outside. Any distinct advantage James had inside he does not appear to have outside so it's going to be tooth and nail.

We'll see in September if James still agree's if he loses the title by three points or less.

good point he knew he could catch reed because reed doesnt have outdoor strength but if he did push the second moto he could only do as good as about .2 seconds a lap faster which woulndt have got the job done anyway

He was only 7 seconds down with roughly 30 minutes of racing to go, one mistake and he's on RC's back tire.

This is getting somewhat boring, Stewart won the OA, and has the points lead and that's all what matters for round 1 mudy condition.

Let's see what the conditions were actually like before assuming anything.... if the track had gone to crap making a charge too risky, it very well have been the right thing to do. Leave with the lead FOR SURE and come back to race another day.

Had he pushed in the mud and thrown it away, the JS crap talk would be incredible.

But, the RC fans can continue to rationalize a victory for RC today

If the MX season was decided by the same kind of point differential as the SX was... in the same year... it would be astronmical. The odds of that happening have got to be higher than winning the loto. My guess is one of the 2 of them will begin to dominate. By Round 6 we will have a good idea who will win the title barring injury or mech failure.

Honestly I don't know who it will be but odds of Reed getting the points break that he did in SX again are not in his favor so I think it is going to be JS or RC. It will be close, but I think more like 10-15 pts

I think it's very important for James to get the overall for his confidence. He wears his heart on his sleeve, when he is feeling good and confident he goes fast, when he get flustered or booed he still goes fast but he messes up more. I think Stewarts camp knew all that cheering for him on the podium would help more in the long run than 2 points.

Wow..Just checked the interval for the second moto..44 seconds :whoa:

I noticed RC had a faster average time in the first moto as well...Well even Reed snuck one in last year...No biggie.

Three Aussies make the podium - Reed on big bikes, Metcalfe & McFarlane on small bikes. Andrew McFarlane could be one to watch... he did quite well in Europe.

Interesting question - obviously it's been a long time since RC lost an overall, what about how long since he finished worst than second in a moto??

Pity about Reed's comments on the outdoor season. I'm as big a fan as anybody, if for no other reason than I like to see a fellow Aussie doing well on the world stage.

He did mention briefly in the TWMX interview about wanting to be home more in Australia, perhaps that is his motivation for a reduced riding season?

No rationilizing here, he got beat fair and square this week, and it will happen again this season. I'm just questioning the strategy on James part.

YOT has to be thrilled with the showing of Metcalfe and McFarlane.
