A friend of mines 99YZ250 is hard to start. Once running; everyting is fine. Warming it up seems to make no difference; still hard to start. The top end is fresh, (maybe 7 hours on an EGorr 265 kit). We just changed the reeds tonight but it made no difference. Still requires 8 or 9 hard kicks to start. Furthermore, the effort required to move the kick lever is very high. We assumed this was because the EGorr kit makes such good compression. Other pertinent info: When the cylinder was modified to 265, the bottom end was also gone through by 2Fast Racing. All new seals and rod kit included. Spark plug is new, jetting is spot on. The only thing I can think of now might be a worn carb slide. The silencer packing maybe has 15 hours on it. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hard starting

Try this, put the bike in second gear and rock it back and forth about 7 times. Pull the choke up and position the kick starter till you feel the piston at the top of the stroke. Kick with everything you got giving it with just a slight twist of throttle. Ive got a CR 500 that starts on the first kick every time using this method. It seems to work for anything bored over 250cc. Hope this helps. Let me Know what happened.

Does the bike idle? If it doesn’t then chances are the slide isn’t worn. Try adjusting the idle screw down so it doesn’t idle & see if it starts easier. Some bikes do like a closed throttle & a bit open means you have to kick them faster.

Rocking the piston back & forth should pull in extra charge, so that makes sense, some real hard starters like a teaspoon of raw gas down the spark hole to help them light up.

You could of course lower the compression to help the kick but. . .
