Has anyone tried HDR?

This HDR thing is pretty cool. It's really easy to over do things, but kind of fun to play with.

Below is an example of before and after HDR. The first is right out of the camera (pretty crappy eh) and the 2nd has the HDR effect applied. Pretty impressive if you ask me. Now all I have to do is figure out how to use it.

I did it with a program called Photomatix. You can download a trial from their website. I believe they also have a plugin for PS.

Squid - How many images did you use to produce the final shot, and how many stops from end to end?

I used 5 images. It was shot in raw, and I used the exposure tool in DPP to go +2, +1, 0 -1, -2 stops.

Definitely cool, some of the HDR stuff Scavo has been putting up from the Stadiums this year has been real eye candy.

I did some 7 stop night shots last winter using the HDR functions built into PS/CS2 but they didn't come out as nice as your shots. I'll have to download the demo and try it out. Thanks Squid.

I tried it with CS2 with no luck a while back and just kind of gave up. A buddy of mine told me about Photomatix so I thought I would give that a try. I didn't understand how to work it either so I gave up on it until a month ago and played with it again. I just kept messing with stuff and I think I have a bit of a handle on it now, but I'm sure there are still lots of little tricks to figure out yet.

As for Scavo's stuff, I really don't care for it. It just looks too fake to me. Maybe if he toned it down a bit, but the way he's been doing it is too much for my liking.

I really like that shot. I've been researching HDR the last couple weeks and Photomatix sounds like the way to go.

Here's one of my first attempts at HDR using PS only. Not exactly the impact that your pic has Squid. :whoa:

Squid, unbelievable clarity! Rich, nice job keeping yourself out of the reflection? Gary, I really like the dust. I will definitely get my kids on this program!

What is HDR?

HDR=High Dynamic Range images.

Basically it makes sure that all portions of the image are exposed correctly. So in areas of shadows or bright light where you would normally see over or underexposure you see perfect exposure.
