HELP, Cant get bolt off crank.

So I went and bought crank seals for my bike today.  Got home and took the right/clutch side cover off to take the seal out.  So I read the Clymer manual and they say put a penny inbetween the clutch and crank gear.  So I do and turn the wrench counter-clockwise to unscrew bolt holding crank gear on.  Well, its tight, it wont come off, the penny went through the gears and came out the other side.  So I tried a dime, same thing.  So then I tried a screwdriver but I cant get the stupid bolt to move.  So I tried turning it clockwise to see if it was supposed to come off that way.  The clymer manual said nothing of which way to turn the bolt, so I assume its the usual way, counter-clockwise.

So I would just like to clarify that your supposed to turn it counter-clockwise, so that I can go back out and put more force into it.

Hey Glitch: You could also put rope or like clothes line in through the sparkplug hole to lock it . Between the gears I like to use a troothbrush . If youve slipped a coin between the gears maybe the bearings are also worn out , If its a CR 129.4 the crank bolt is R/H threads and CCW to remove. Maybe a friend has an impact gun ?The bolt has probably been loctited real good . Good Luck

The impact wrench is the only way to go. It will come off almost immediately after hitting it with some serious air!

You may be able to go to a auto parts store that has a tool loaning program (like autozone) and tell them you need an impact wrench. If you don't have a compressor see if they have a Electric one. It should do the trick.

If the bike is on the stand and you have it in gear (if you have not removed the chain) you can take a prybar or large screw driver and put it through a hole in the sproket and then spin it so that it locks against the swingarm (make sure to put a shop towel around the end of it so it does not scuff things up). It works for my clutch nut.

The third option would be to take an old counter sproket and have a bar welded onto it (7/8" to 1 and 1/8") and stick and old grip on the end. You can just put it in gear and slide the tool on the sprocket shaft.

One last note a cheater bar or breaker bar can be used on the nut if you did not use it already. I have a couple of different size lengths of pipe that I can slide over the end of the rachet handle so you get more leverage on it. Just keep the pressure slow and steady.

Thanks alot for the help everyone. I finally got it off last night. Before I was using a wrench, then I tried a breaker bar with socket. That finally got it off because I could apply quick force. The bearings are fine, the coins were totally smushed where they went throught the gears, I'll try a take a pic of them, they're real messed up, and the gears dont even have a nick in them. Anyway, it was pretty easy to replace the seal and it makes a world of a difference. Before, I could never even warm the bike up because it would foul from the oil leaking past seal. Now its all better. Thanks again for the replys.

Glad to hear you got the nut off, and fixed you r leak Glitch.

Yes, the 12v impact gun works!
I used it on my pick up a couple of weeks ago when I was rotating the tires. What that impact wrench does is spin up-and once the 12v motor is up to speed a clutch is tripped- *Wham* Then it will spin up again. It even comes with a carying case with 4-5 sockets. For 20$ it's a bargain. I mean really what else on a bike do you need air tools for besides the FW nut and the clutch basket?
