help from older MXers

first off i mean nothing at all when i say "older" im just looking for any input from riders who have been around long enough to know about vintage bikes. i am 27 and have been riding since i was 6 i also have been working on bike for a good part of my life i use to own a kx500 and now own a cr500 so i have been around big bore 2-strokes. they reason i am on here is because i just got a great deal on a 1982 yz490 i bought it for $300 dollars and it seams to run pretty strong but i know nothing about it and it seams every one trashes on them is there any one out there that could tell me about this bike or give me there opinion on it thanks!

Do a search on here for the head mod.Or send the head off to Eric Gorr for the work.Yamaha screwed up the combustion chamber royally on the 490.Spend some time and money on it and you'll have a nice vintage beast.

the reason there is no love for that bike is it stopped being developed about 1981. they just sold until they died in like 89? and lived on as the WR500 for a few more years before they went extinct.

the KX and the CR 500s at least go inverted forks, dual disc brakes and liquid cooling compared to the dead yz490
