i just ordered a top end gasket set for my kdx and i found that moose makes a "high compression" set. wow i thought, 'that's great'. but then i was just thinking about the whole thing and got to wondering if that could change some things that i don't need to work on right now. i am headed to the new hampshire classic in less then a month and i have got to ask you guys, do you think that this is just a bolt on and go product, or am i in for more then i thought?

The KDX is a relatively low compression engine. Even a high-compression (thinner) head gasket won't raise the compression enough to do any harm, and you'll actually gain a bit of low-end "snap". If you use a thinner base gasket in conjunction with the thinner head gasket, I would be sure to check the squish clearance.

is there any particular way that i should check the squish clearance? just look at it, or bolt it all up and SLOWLY crank the engine over? i don't think i have a thinner base gasket but you never know till you know.

Insert a piece of soft solder in through the plug hole, all the way to the edge of the cylinder, and kick the piston past TDC. Then just measure the squished solder with a micrometer to determine your squish clearance. I don't think you ever want less than about 1mm of squish clearance, or you risk the piston contacting the head at high rpms.

Who did you order the high compression gasket kit from?
