After several attempts trying to clear a 70 feet tabletop, I could only clear about 65 feet. I am going just as fast as the other riders, clearing the jump. I talk to guy(who was clearing it) that said to compress my bike against the lip or the jump. Can anyone explain that to me please?
Thanks ahead of time!!

he's probably referring to pre-loading the suspension. Sort of push down on the bike just as you are about to hit the face of the jump, if the jump has a lip or kicker do it then. Just as you leave the ground you can use your legs to lift the bike a little too. I've seen guys haul butt right up to the face and quick brake then back on the gas hard to achieve the same thing. It's surprising what you can make a bike do when you try different techniques hitting jumps.

I learned to jump on my old XR so I got used to pre-loading the suspension on EVERY jump. I lock my feet on the pegs and jump down on the bike just before takeoff and wham! Your flying higher and farther.

You need to be accelerating going up the face of the jump, Not a steady speed. This keeps the suspension compressed.

Right before I hit the face of the jump, I let off the throttle and as the suspension begins to compress I get back on it, accelerating all the way up the jump and I "push" the bike into the face of the jump.

At the top, I try to get my weight off the bike as I leave the ramp and help pull the bike up with my legs.

Hope this helps

jumping

Sometimes what I'll do to get that little bit extra off the jump is this. I do the pre load routine so I'll be pushing the bike down on face. Me knees will be bent so just as I clear the lip I sort of jump up quickyl with the bike imparting a little bit more upward motion, kinda like a ski jumper does right at the end of the ramp. The other thing is close to the apex of the jump I will pull the bike up to me to try and gain a little more height. Those steps usually help me to get that extra distance needed.

After the races this weekend

A friend of mine that rides West Coast sx showed up to do some hot laps and in the coarse ended up giving pointers to some of the younger riders. As he was following behind very slowly the younger riders Adam would from just barely a roll would hit a jump in 1st gear and clear it. We're talking 45' tabletops. I noticed he helps the bike to clear by using his body and strong, short but consistent acceleration all the way up the face. It was too cool.

I was talking to another sx rider that was telling me that he normally did the catapult jumps in 2nd gear but had done them in 1st. This leads me to believe that it's not about how fast you hit them but rather how hard you're on the gas and what you do with your body that will give the desired results. Anybody else with me on this?

I'm with you but being on the gas up a jump face (I'm afraid) will give me a face plant.

I know what you're talking about :whiner:
My 1st ride after broken ribs I was just out taking it easy and basically rolled up to the face of a tabletop I had done several times before my spill but this time I had no intention of jumping it. As I was rolling up the face I slipped the clutch and accelerated figuring I would just sort of bring the front end up a bit at the lip. Well, since I had been off the bike for 7 weeks I guess I sort of over did it. I shot up into the air and flew all the way over the top. I had all kinds of time to over react but I just raised up over the bars and nosed it down on the landing and it was smooth as silk. I'm not really sure how I managed to do it and haven't had the courage to try it since. Got to admit it was a great feeling.

I was watching my friend Adam fly up to the face of a jump and practically lock the brakes for a second without sliding, this compressed the suspension and as he let of the brakes the bike just floated over the top. He was back on the gas for landing and made it look so easy. I try to do that but I often end up braking too hard and have to get back on the gas to clear the jump.

When I asked advice he said to practice braking, especially front brake. I work on that a lot and can really tell the difference on how I ride. It's easy to twist the throttle and go fast, it's the braking and coasting that really slows me down.

I went to the track to try it. But before i could around to that jump, my throttle tube sliped insiide the grip. I then hit a berm and smacked on the side of another jump. I am ok but, i wish i could say the same for my bike. Bent protapers, sub- frame, and snapped my back fender.i think if that berm i hit was that table top, i would have defintly cleared it!!! lol

That double that Pastrana jumped was one a works RM 250 similar to K-Dub's, but travis used to jump the supercross triples in second gear. He had one tooth larger on the front sprocket than danny smith and rodrig thain. but I can't really base how I jump on him, because he is not even your ordinary pro. (IMO)
