Are there hockey fans here? My dad got tickets to the capitals game on the glass. What should I expect? Tell me everything.

Big Fun!!!

I started going to hockey games about 10 years ago (IHL-Kansas City Blades) just for something to do. I found myself jumping up and cheering involuntarily. It's great fun!

One time, I went to a fight, and a hockey game broke out!

Never fails. We get some good seats from a contractor trying to do a little "marketing" and we're getting things hit at us. Go to a baseball game and and we're dodgin' stichballs go to a hockey game and black rubber discs are knocking over my beer. I think I prefer to go to the hockey games though because it's like a 2 for 1 sport, you get some ultimate fighting and hockey at the intermissions.

It's great! Go early and watch warmups. Get someone to explain a couple of the basic rules first - icing, offsides, two-line pass; then the chaos makes a lot more sense! ;)

I took my wife to her first hockey game years ago, now she even watches it on tv and yells at the tv!

It's very fast and very exciting. One of the few sports that's almost as fun to watch as it is to play. Have fun!

Gotta agree with MxDad. Learn some of the basic rules and the game will be much easier to understand. Hockey is one of the few sports where the fans can get a little rowdy and yell and scream and not feel out of place.

My wife got me interested in hockey a few years ago and now we go to at least ten games a year ! My wife is ALMOST as interested in hockey as I'm to motorcycles  As a matter of fact we're going this Saturday night to watch the Red Wings play the Kings.

Hey MxDad,do you ever go to the games ? Do you watch the Ducks or the Kings ?

Wow, you're in for a thrill. I've been to three NHL games on the glass, and nothing compares (except maybe for courtside NBA- but to me basketball is the boringest game on earth and I'd rather pop zits & pick earwax than go to another).

Definitely get there early for warmups. How old are you? Young kids can hang out on the glass during warmups and almost always get a puck from a player. When my nephew was younger, we'd hold him up to the glass during warmups, with a homemade sign saying "Stick or Puck please". Worked everytime.

Watching from the glass doesn't actually give the best view- I'd prefer about 10-15 rows up, on center ice. I'd recommend you watch a game on T.V. tonight (unless your tix are for tonight). Guys to watch on Washington are JaromirJagr (possibly injured), Peter Bondra (one of the better wingers in the league right now), and defenseman Sergei Gonchar. They have some other good players, but none that are really heathing things up.

If you're going to Thursday's home game against Carolina, you'll be in for a treat. That' should be some good hockey. Players to watch on Carolina are Jeff O'Neill, Sami Kapanen, Ron Francis, and defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh. Again, these are the players that are doing really well right now, scoring points.

It also helps if you can get a stats sheet for that night's game. Usually arena's hand out free player stats for both teams, that way you know if it was some rookie that just goofed up big time, or a seasoned vet. Also, you can check out the players with the fewest points, but the most penalty minutes. These are called "hitmen" or "bruisers"- guys on the roster solely for fighting. They don't get much icetime, but if a team's down by a few goals, sometimes the coach will send one of these guys out to get some momentum going for his team.

Both goalies are tops in the league, too. Arturs Irbe for Carolina is sort of a headcase- when he's hot he's a brick wall in the net, when he's cold he's like a siv. He's been a brick wall lately.

One more thing- don't set your drink on the rail of the glass- I guarantee it'll get knocked off into your lap. and when they play the Zamboni song, sing along. That's one of my favorites.... "yeah I wanna drive the Zamboneeeee":)

Hockey Rules!

The Capitals are a great organization and I go to about 25 games a year. Seats on the glass are a huge thrill. I had them 3 rows back last Friday night and they are just awesome.

Hopefully, you'll get hooked! DC needs to become a real hockey town!!

Have a great time!!!!!

I'm not a big 'sports' fanatic but I gotta say Hocky is one of my favorites. Maybe because it's so similar to Boxing, which is one of my favorites!
I've only been to a few games (Kings) but I had a great time. We're usually in the 'nose bleed' seats but I found out later that I prefer it up there! The one time we sat down lower in the "good" seats I was too paranoid to enjoy the game. I felt like we were TOO close and that if I took my eyes away from the ice for one second that was gonna be the second I get whacked in the head with a hockey puck!! :scream:

I'd like to take TTRGuy to a game in LA sometime so if there are any fellow DRN'rs that would like to meet up for a game let me know! :)

:(Ugh, unfortunately my wife comes from the same batch as yours, and I know who you're talking about- Rudy Galindo, and he comes from good ol' California (where else?). She swears Brian Boitano is straight, but come on... a straight figure skater? Isn't that an oxymoron?

HEY! Cram it! I LOVE Rudy Galindo!!! His rendition to "YMCA" was probably the most entertaining bit I've ever seen!! :)
Hmmm, me thinks I need to strap some boots with a single blade of metal to the bottoms of Zio's and Patty's feet and then shove them out onto a patch of ice!! :p
If you don't think it takes an extreme amount of skill, poise, and absolute physical perfection to be an ice skater the likes of Rudy, Brian, Scott, then I suggest you remove your head from your arse and pay attention!! :p

Hockey is definitely a fun sport to watch in person. You'll have a blast at the games .. Here in Greenville, SC we have a ECHL team.. the Greenville Growl (mascot is a fluffy dog) How queer is that? Regardless the games are fun to watch .. I guess it could be worse - the baseball team where I used to live was called the Charleston Rainbows... I think Brian Botano was the pitcher! :D

Meeow! Actually, I play hockey and can totally appreciate their skill. Now I can't appreciate that they use said skill for an excuse to twist the throttle on the "Bedazzzler" WFO to beautify some already too colorful spandex. :p

And another thing- if Scott's head is so big, why doesn't he wear baggier clothes to minimize the unfortunate porportions?

Who would EVER believe that the Calgary Flames would be near the top of the league once more? And a Flame (Iginla) on top of the points race? Wow, glory days are here again! The last time the Flames did this well ('89) we won the cup.

Now, personally I don't think we have a hope of winning it this year, but ya gotta love it when your team sucks for so many years, and then has a massive turnaround the next season!

Greatest game on earth!

Okay. I went to the game last night and I had a great time. Our seats were closer to the glass than I expected...I jumped every times they hit the glass. The three people next to us all set beers on the glass, luckily the picked them off just in time. I saw some good fights. One broken nose (I think he hit the ice...). The biggest thing that suprised me was the way the players left the penalty box...swing the door open (trying to hit somebody in the process), and rush out. The little kids who played after the first period seemed like mini riders. But despite the good time, we lost 3-2.

Rules!:mad:You're not serious...It's pro wrestling with uniforms on ice. If it had real rules the refs would stop the stupid fights right away instead of skating around for a few minutes before the break them up. The skill is there for all to see...some of the things they can do on skates and with the puck is phenominal. But there is a reason it was pulled from TV for several years and it appears they haven't learned a thing. I also agree with zio's description of Basketball too. Isn't there a rule called 'traveling'? I guess that one only applies to players who don't get paid:debil:
There...:think now I feel better. I woke up in a crappy mood but thanks to the DRN vent line I think I'll go clean up the bike

It is a physically played sport. If you cant deal with WATCHING physical sport without whining about there not being any "real rules" in place, then maybe you should start attending musicals or ballet or whatever you feel is more appropriate or less competitive. If you have ever participated in a sport, you know that sometimes emotions play a big part in your actions (eg. fighting, pushing, hitting...). Hockey is a game in which physical play is a must to succeed, sometimes it is rougher than others, causing people like Dirty Dave to feel that it is not real and there are no rules due to the referees being a part of the conspiracy. :think In my opinion, the NHL has the best officiating in all of professional sports.

But there is a reason it was pulled from TV for several years and it appears they haven't learned a thing.
If you don't like it dont watch it.:silly:

Dirty Dave, if you were a hockey ref, would you want to jump in the middle of two big men having a bare fist fight and tell them to stop.....please ;)
