This is probably a stupid question to most .....BUT I am curious if there is a proper way to determine final drive gearing ? I currently have a CR144 which seems to run through the gears a little too quick with 13/53 gearing , I tried a 14/53 set-up but ended up needing to use the clutch quite a bit to keep the RPM's up. Is gearing sort of a personal thing or is there a science to it ?? I am currently practicing on a 1.5 mile motocross style track that I will only hit 4th gear for only one very short section. Thanks again.....

Think your switch to a 14 front is too radical. That is why you might not be happy with the results. I have been experimenting with different rear sprockets lately and I think it was well worth the hassle. I have a 51, 52 and 53 rear sprocket. I ended up liking different sprockets for different tracks. A thighter track goes well for me with the 53. Although, the main track I go to is better with a 52 tooth. I like the 52 for most applications now with the 133. Before I liked the 53 better because my bike was anemic. I liked the 51 only in a practice area that is basically flat and jumpless. The 51 rear is too tall on the track and I don't know why I keep it really. Just one tooth more/or less on the rear makes a very noticeable difference and it is worth experimenting. I'm pretty sure you will like the 52.

1 tooth on the front is roughly worth 4 teeth on the back. Quite a steep jump.
It is going to be a compromise to suit your needs between a good start, easy to get out of turns quickly and top speed .

just get some cheap generic rear sprockets of different sizes, find the one you like the most, then buy a good quality one that will last a while
