I have a '00 xr250r last winter i put in a high compression wisco. for an oil temp point of view how hot is ok. I am planing on buying a dipstick with a thermometer. is an oil cooler nessary. thanks for the help in advance.

when I bought the xr's only dipstick, it stated that up to 300 degrees was normal. IMO, anything over 270 would cause me to stop and cool down the engine.

I'd say 300F is not some place I'd like to hang out, 260 to 270 would be about the extent of my comfort level! SRC & Al Baker both offer a temp dip stick to monitor where you are. I installed the SRC oil cooler kit (XR400 based kit) when Rich built my 284 and run Amsoil 10w40 4T motorcycle oil just to make sure it's never an issue even in the summer here in Texas.
