I had to adjust my valves 3 times before replacing them just a while back. And that was 11 months after buying the bike. I wouldn't say it was a problem, just needed to stay on top of things. The X is great for trails, which is what it was made for. If you are wanting the electic start in a race bike then with a few mods you should be able to do what ever you want with the X. I'm replacing my valves with stainless steel ones from Kibble White this fall. Yes it will cost some bucks at first, but in the long haul it will be worth it. So you might look into what you can afford and decide from there.
I just bought one too. I think its better than a good bike, its an outstanding bike. I think the maintanence shedule will be more frequent than some other bikes but well worth it IMO
From what I've seen (several riding buddies have them) it is an outstanding bike and very reliable when well maintained. Maintance requirement is rather high, but not out of line with the other race 250F's. I wouldn't worry about breaking down on one, but you must be prepared to do all the maintance it is supposed to have, which means lots of valve adjustments and probably head work every couple of seasons or so. I'm happy with my CR250R though:)
I've had mine for just over a year now with "0" problems. I checked the valves and they hadn't tightened at all. I changed out the jetting and needle and eliminated the emissions unit and it runs great. Raced it last DW, ride it regularly here with normal oil changes and it's a great bike. If you plan on racing it all the time, plan on valve adjustments like any other 250 class ride.
We have tons of riders out here on the CRF250X and other various Honda dirt bikes. They are pretty solid. Many of us ride them every weekend with no significant problems. Go for it! You won't be dissappointed.
