1 more thing about dealers well the majority of them.They say they will give you a discount on part's,but alot of them bump up the manufactures suggested price, you can see the price on the code sticker on the oem kawa parts. Let's take a 00 kx 250 piston 71.00 is the retail price at the dealer, the computer will show 81.00 they give you your 10 or 15%,but not from the original price they should charge. Alot of dealers are snakes.I on the other hand am very fortunate to have found a descent dealer,and I can finally say I will buy all my part's from them. They have a excellent inventory I already tested them,LOL.I have a dealer 15 minutes from me that I don't do business with anymore,the dealer I do my business with, is located in pa 1.25 hr drive. I will be getting my bike from them and all my part's are shipped to me,the average price is 5.00 so far on a average size box.They gave me 15% off part's and accessories THE TRUE PRICE. Now instead of a piston costing me nearly 80.00 I PAY 63.00. That is how you do business. SCABS.. :scream:

I've had the same situation. The dealers in my area won't give the time of day if you don't ride water or street. Mail order is the way to go. I would support a good local dealer but I can't find one. Bobs Cycle Supply beats all of my local dealers on price AND availability. If I order by tuesday I have it by Friday!!! :debil:

Same problem here. Back home in Arkansas I had a great dealer. I bought two bikes and a quad from him. I only found one decent dealer in Northeast Va. when I was there. Now, down here in Fl, I can't find a good dealer. Guess I'll be ordering all my parts mail order too.

why do you think they should only charge the price that "they should charge?" the 71.00 is the suggested retail price. as long as they don't have a monopoly on parts, i don't see anything wrong with trying to get a better price. if you believe that you are being overcharged, say something to them. if they don't care, go elsewhere. maybe you weren't getting 10-15% off suggested retail but you still were getting 10-15% off the going price, thereby saving money. i don't understand why everyone thinks dealers owe them something. did you offer them anything in return for a discount?

for the record, i don't work for a motorcycle dealer. i don't even work in the motorcycle industry.

Trouble is with any system of charging more than RRP is that you end up with people hiking the price up 50% and then giving so called 'massive savings' our double glazing and furnature shops do this-no one buys unless its 50% off and theres always a "HUGE SALE"it makes a list price system a mockery

mx547, if a dealer is selling stuff at retail price, they are still making a profit I believe. If they sell stuff at a higher price then they risk losing business to a competitor. Dealers dont owe anyone anything. In return for them giving the public a discount, they, in return, recieve our money for the product, and usually more money in the future for more products.

i think you mean "suggested" retail price. retail price is whatever they can sell it to the public for. you're not telling me anything i don't already know. i guess what i'm saying is that i don't understand the thinking that a dealer should be held to a pre-established price, then make discounts from there. if they lose business the other way, too bad for them. as you say, it's a risk they take. in my opinion, a discount should be earned, not just given to the public because they want one. i agree with marcus that a 50% mark-up is ridiculous but i don't find a $10 increase from suggested retail price on a piston as being outrageous. nothing against bigred455, he did exactly as i would have, he found a dealer that treated him the way he wanted to be treated. i just don't see that he was getting "snaked".

50% is not uncommon at all, especially if you expect your dealer to stock anything instead of having it back ordered all the time. People are just starting to think that's too high because mail order companies make them look bad. Where's the service? Can you test ride a new bike through the internet? That's where the markup comes in, folks. Buy where you will, but just don't expect much from the local dealer if you don't give him your business.

Buy the way, I do the same as many of you guys, so I know where you are coming from.

by 50%, i meant 50% over suggested retail. i know my dealer doesn't mark up that much but i don't doubt that it happens. suggested retail is usually about a 100% increase over cost.

New CR250? Tempting, isn't it? Especially if the motor rips this year...

yeah, percentages can get confusing.

i'll probably get the 250 but am considering the 450. in keeping with the percentages discussion, i'm about 80% leaning toward the 250. i've read in more than one place that the motor is awesome.

i am yet to find a dealer i have any time of the day for, they all suck around here, complete morons from top to bottom, i had an incident today which nearly started me smoking again!

i try to buy as much afternarket as possible, i found a small local shop, i got to know the guy personally now he looks after me and i look after him. sometimes he cant give me the same price as online, but i will pay over the odds, since the next time he will give me a deal on something else! i even get a good chinwag into the bargain!

Hey bclapham, same thing with me. There's a dealer around me that is specifically Honda. They are a fairly large dealer and are in it for the money only. Most of the people working there are college kids or just out of college, and they dont know jack about dirtbikes, I know more than them. Yet they still charge about 5% over suggested retail value. There is a local smaller shop which I was recommended to because my friends dad knows one of the owners. Its call RRP, stands for Rossini Racing Products. Everyone working there is part of the Rossini family, except for a few very knowledgable guys. I've become friends with most of the guys, because I'm getting parts from them almost every week. They charge suggested retail price and are very profitable with it. If something is $15.04 or anything thats penny and nickels, they just round it down, its like where all a big family shop, all dirtbikers.

The best way to find out what a person is willing to pay is to charge way too much for it. I'm still shaking my head over the failure of Priceline.com. Great concept, crappy execution.

Glass companies in my town routinely advertise "Windshields - 70% OFF". :scream: Talk about an unrealistic pricing system. . .

Trying to get a better price,when the mark up is already profitable for the dealer, off of the suggested retail price is greed!!! Yes I did offer them something for a discount, a loyal customer and networking(positve remarks)to other riders .No longer though, I have seen their true colors. Remember it is not all about the almighty dollar, customer service is just as important, which the motorcycle industry lacks.Just because the dealer gives fair prices on parts and bikes will not make me a loyal customer.

I'd like to own that dealership ;) Although I no longer work in the business, I can tell you that 100% margin is pretty unrealistic in the motorcycle industry...now sporting goods...that's another story :think:

a chinwag is a term for having a chat or gossip, it is usually done over a nice cup of hot tea with milk in, but i doubt even my parts guy would understand if i went in and said

"ayup me duck, put the kettle on i fancy a brew", but that phrase would work well anyware in the East Midlands area of the UK!
