actually its not like that..

its more like...

Earned wages.............................1000 pounds
Minus compulsary national health care insurance,,,,,,- 200 pounds
Minus healthcare insurance,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,-100 pounds
minus gas for the month .............- 600 pounds

Sounds like you are overtaxed. Do you get to eat over there? There has to be some way to make it over there or we would be recieving people from the UK moving here in droves.

BTW, I drive a 4cyl. Honda getting about 26-28mpg. Not too bad. I do agree that when people buy 10 mpg vehicles they shouldn't really complain with fuel prices.

MikeT.

to be fair, i dont think its the norm to pay £600 for fuel a month

but the way the income tax works here is

25% base rate income tax
40% on everything over around £30,000
from the pay packet also gets taken national insurance contributions [compulsary healthcare style payments] of around £200 a month [dependant on income]

then on all purchases we pay VAT [value added tax] which works out at 17.5% ontop of the value of the goods.

if we save money,, thats taxed,, and if parents leave us money we pay inheritance tax.

fuel duty [tax] here is really high [almost 90% i believe]
we also have to buy a road tax disc here as well each yeah [£200+]
insurance ,,,if your 17 and want to drive even a small car your looking at approx £2000 a year.
to drive into london there is a fee of around £5 [each day],, this is due to be copied in other big cities.
More toll roads are being built.
There is now also talk of being charged an additional tax for driving on busier roads at peak times,,

example 60pence a mile on motorway at peak times

Ontop of that there are automatic speed camara's EVERYWHERE

so in a 30 zone if you do 34mph you get a £60 fine and 3 points on your license
[12 points and you recieve a driving ban],,, and a really hefty hike in car insurance.

motorists in the UK are really being given a rough deal

If our government taxed that much, all our leaders would be strung up and beaten with sticks.

LOL. 26mpg would be considered absolutely horrific over here. The car I use to tow the bike trailer (with 3 adult bikes) to races gets 65mpg. 1.6 turbo diesel, 110HP.

I'm sure taxation is more or less the same, we pay it on petrol, you pay it on something else, no problem there. However as somebody already said, people who insist on driving gas gusslers shouldn't complain. $150 to fill the tank and 10-15mpg, come on! $60 fills the tank of the car above. It has no problem towing the trailer with three bikes and loaded with gear, before anybody says they need 400HP to pull their YZ125.

And dump all their tea overboard! Maybe even start a revolution, too.
