Lets say, for the sake of it, a rider goes to a hare scrambles in another town and ends up hurting his back and breaking a collarbone. He goes to that towns ER, gets a cat-scan and is given his x-rays and told to see a Doc in his hometown. When the rider goes to the oth surgeon the next day in his home town is he better off saying that the accident happened on a mountain bike as apposed to a dirt bike? What about insurance issues? Any comments would be greatly appreciated

i actually asked my doctor that same question. He didn't seem to think that it matters how you got the injury. don't quote me on this, but that is just what i was told and my insurance has covered everything they are supposed to.

Had a similar thing happen back in '99. If you tell one healthcare provider you got hurt at a motorcycle race and another that you fell off a bicycle this will raise a flag with your health insurance provider. Stick to the same "story" with each injury.

I just broke my ankle at DW02 and the consensus reached by the group was to not tell them you were in a race. Some insurance companies wont cover being hurt in a race. Kinda like skydiving. They figure racing is not a normal part of life and a risk you inflick on yourself.

I hade no choice in hiding the fact that i was on a dirt bike since i went into the ER wearing all the gear. I did however neglect to tell them i was racing (Ok not really a race but close :p ). When i got to my local Orthopedic Surgeon he asked what happened. I told him i fell off a dirt bike while on vacation. I didnt mention anything about racing. If you went into the ER with riding gear on then dont hide the fact that you were riding a dirtbike. You know the ER put something in the paper work about having riding gear and involved in a dirt bike accident. You lie about not being on a bike and the insurance company checks the ER reports (which they will) then your in deep trouble for lying. Tell them you went to "X" place riding with some buds and got hurt. That's what i did.

I would verify with your insurance company exactly what they cover or don't cover, after your accident is covered. I have had a lot of work done over the last few years. Broken leg, broken collar bone, rib xrays, lung operation all because of dirt bikes and all of it has been covered under the terms of my insurance. Which means they covered 80-90% of everything. My last helicopter ride was $9000 when I broke my leg and they covered all of it except my $200 deductible.

As a Physician, generally what I need to know for insurance is if any other insurance rather than your primary insurance is responsible. ie: workers comp, auto, homeowners, etc. Since with most races, other insurance is not involve, your primary insurance should cover, but it is good to check your policy before you race, since a prolonged hospital stay without coverage will break almost anyone.
