Hi,

The choke lever on my 2002 kdx200 will not stay engaged - meaning that I pull the lever up and it just falls back down into the off position. After kicking for a while I got it started without the choke and then tried holding the choke in the on position and it didnt seem to be working at all, the bike died unless I gave it gas. Any ideas about where to start looking and what to be looking for?

Thanks,
Joe

Yes. Two ideas.

Your choke plunger shaft is worn out, full of junk...or more likely the plastic ridge in the boot that fits over the shaft is shot.

1. Remove the choke from the carb body. Remove the boot from the shaft. Clean the groove in the shaft. (Be careful) Dress the edges of the groove if they are rounded (probably not). Put it back together with a small tie-wrap around the boot to give the retainer 'ring' a bit extra squeeze.

Or.......

2. Replace the choke.

i vote for CC's suggestion #2 - replace the choke lever. I messed around with mine for too long before finally resulting in replacement. I wish i would have just replaced the thing. :|

Mine allways slips closed after I start the bike and it is running for 20 - 30 seconds. Kind of like an automatic choke so I don't have to remember to shut it off. Only irritating on cold fall rides.
