My suggestion would be not to hit the rocks. Plastic fork protectors will not help, they'll just get ripped up. Keep hitting your lower forks and your valves will become non-serviceable.
I've got a plastic fork and disk protector and they help a little, but not a whole lot. The bottom of my forks are really beat up already. I guess its just something we have to live with if we ride in rocky areas.
