Would a beginner be better off with a 03 KTM EXC 200 (2 stroke) or an 03 ktm exc 250 (4 stroke)? This is for trails and maybe a hare scramble or two. He is still a beginner but is really cathching on quickly. I'm mostly worried about hills. Keep in mind he's not very fast. Thanks!

4 stroke! I dont know specifically about an exc 250 (I was thinking about a 450) but generally 4 stroke are more tame & IMO easier to learn on (specialy for trails). However if hes gonna be doin primarily motocross then a 2 smoker is the way to go.... Good luck!

ktm two strokes (the non-SX models) are not like CRs and YZs ect. their power delivery is much more linear.

as to which you should get, i think whatever you can get a better deal on is the way to go. the 2 strke will be a bit more challenging but not insane or anything.

The 200 will be much, much lighter and easier to handle than the 250 thumper. Suspension will be the same on both bikes. The 200 will probably have a bit more motor than the thumper too as he grows into the bike that may make him happier. The 200 will be more sensitive to throttle input than the thumper. How old is this rider and is this the first year riding? If this person is not real big I would think that the 200 would be the best bet.

What about a 250 EXC 2 stroke then? Still lighter than the tunmper.

He is exactly the same size as me, and I have a 250 MXC. As others here have stated, it can be jetted to deliver VERY smooth power, yet still lively enough to keep a smile on your face. Even if he gets real good, really fast, there is little chance he will out grow the 2 stroke power any time soon.

if he is 6'00" and 200lbs and been riding for 2 years, then an exc250 2 strke is certainly not out of the question. hell, for a guy that big a 450 EXC would be the ticket.
