Lights without a Coil

Just wondered if anyone has ever put lights on their bike without actually using a lighting coil. Ive found a source for 12v SLA batteries that are dirt cheap. They also have really cheap chargers for the same. Im thinking about installing the battery in the airbox and just run a switch in between it and the headlight. Seems simple enough, any thoughts on it??

I used a small gel cell battery that was made for the starter box of my RC car switched to a 50 watt lazer-star type light when riding at the dunes until I bought a stator. I could get about 35-40 minutes light time on this setup. I actually built a bracket to mount the battery on top of my front fender in front of my forks. Wasnt good for long periods, but worked well enough to get me to the hill when I blew up my sandrail.

Check bicycle shops. There are some really bright bicycle lights for mountain biking. Some models mount to your helmet.
