I could go into the details, but I’ll pass on them for now. After a short adventure on the Motard track I was lucky enough to have a full bore run-away engine (I whent so far as to pull the wire totaly off of the plug and it kept running, creepy to watch trust me on this) followed by a seized big-end barring. I was able to pull the head and cylinder with ease, and the crank spins as much as it can easily, but the big end of the rod is toast and I have the shaving to prove it. So I know that I need to split the cases. I’ve never done that, and after that I’m a bit lost as to what to do. So any help on splitting cases on a ’01 YZ250, and what do I need to rebuild the crank?

Sorry to hear about the bad luck Kav. I've got no advice for you since that's beyond what I would attempt but good luck!

Make sure you use the right flywheel puller and some sort of case splitting tool. On my KX I use a harmonic balancer puller using long bolts into the stator mounting holes for a case splitter, used it today. I broke two gear teeth on 5'th gear. Eric's book will be a big help also. Good luck. Ed
