Michigan Family Enduro Series

Thanks to the help of fellow DRN'ers - fatherandson, Magoo and our club we are starting a 3 race series of family enduros. 12 MPH averages. These are district 14 races designed to help get newer riders started in off road.

awesome concept been wanting 13 year old to experience true single track enduro riding.Have not entered in any races because of course difficulty and not wanting him to become traction for a-riders.This sounds like just the ticket.Will district 17 riders need to purchase district 14 memberships?

Nope. These do not require a district card, I *think* they don't require an AMA card either. We never did last year unless that changes this year. And you are right, these are exactly intended for 13 year olds to ride and have fun. Last year there were kids on xr 50's ripping through our check 7-8 minutes "hot" and having a blast! Once they were turned loose the concept of time keeping escaped them.

I thought that a lot of the reason for AMA and/or District membership requirements was for insurance and liability reasons. Do clubs like LMC and Sandstormers carry their own?

Sandstormers works hard to keep the entry fee for the Mini-Moose as low as possible. We DO NOT require D-14 membership or AMA membership. We realize there are not a lot of "Kids Enduro Events," so it's tough for many families to rationalize these memberships just so their kids can participate in a single event. We certainly don't want the "cost" part of the event to be prohibitive!
We've been able to purchase a seperate insurance policy specifically for the Mini-Moose event. It costs substantially more than what we could get from the AMA, but we feel it allows more participants to ride the Mini-Moose. Our goal is to increase participation and involvement with the sport, not make money on the event.
I would like to see this series grow to where it'd make sense to require AMA membership to participate. I believe we all should support the AMA and D-14, as they've done a tremendous amount of good for us and for all riders!

Oh yeah, I will definitely give one of these a try! My 6 year old has been bugging me about being able to ride an enduro, so he can be like me;)
Would the kids run first and then the adults?

I believe that these events are designed for all ages, but primarily targeted at beginners and kids. Typically a 12 MPH average, it is not a rip, rail, and roost fest. It's meant to introduce people to the sport of enduro racing. Kids and adults run together. Typically a parent will ride 'X' class on the same row as their kid. The speed average is kept down so that you don't have 25 year olds on YZ-250s blasting past and running 6 year olds on XR-50s off the trail.

What's nice is that for at least two of them, there is a family enduro the first day, and a regular enduro the second day, i.e. Mini Moose -> Loose Moose, Pine Cone -> Jack Pine.
