If I go to a larger rear sprocket will that give me more power
down low? Or do I have this all wrong..
Will it make my get up and go quicker?
How hard is it to add a flywheel weight..
(larger) rear sprocket will shorten the range between gears, will lower first gear and make the bike rev quicker in each gear. You will have more power in every gear but the bike will not run as high of a top speed. I tried a 12T front sprocket on my bike and after riding it that way for quite a while I decided I didn;t like it -I ended up in 4-5 gear on fast single laners and didn;t get it to break the rear tire loose quick enough. I'm going back to stock gearing this year.
I went with the 12T sprocket on the front for a couple of races. It does seem to give you more low end, but at the sacrifice of top end. It worked great in the tight woods and big hill climbs. But when you hit the open stuff, everybody blew right by me. I went back to the stock 13 and 47, learned to keep the rpms up a little more and this seems to work good for me. For the enduros with extremely tight stuff and very few roads, I'm getting a 49T to go on the rear. That should be perfect.
