Check this out - my father in law, Ron Brinker, won the unlimited championship in the World Karting Association. It's an east coast series including races at Daytona, Mid-Ohio, Road Atlanta, etc . . .:
And BTW, he was running a 1998 CR 125 engine in a kart he paid $2500 for - and the class allows motors up to 250 cc - including 4 strokes.
Oddly, he says that he NEVER uses the clutch after the start - says it's not necessary if you're in the proper gear.

Two 135cc single cylinder 490 lbs., any carb(s), open fuel. Two 100cc single cylinder 465 lbs., any carb(s), open fuel. Two 135cc single cylinder fan cooled (West Bend 820 and Mac 101), 420 lbs., any carb(s), open fuel. Notes – see tech manual.
OTHER: Class runs both days for one single championship.
