Now I'm cutting the bars, studding some tires, working out various used bike "kinks", and getting it ready for some bare banging. :ride:

(1991 Kawasaki KDX250 ~ loaded up at the hotel in Philly)

I'm new to smokers so I may need to tap the expertise of some of our more seasoned smoking vets to get some tuning tips.

I was really surprised at how well it ran when I test road it over the weekend.


I drove all the way to Philidephia over the weekend to get this thing, (and before anyone says a word... Even after the trip it was still a deal ) and now I cant wait to get it set up and try her out. but I can already see I'm gonna miss my magic button. Kicking sux. :bang: and this things kicker doesnt seem to catch properly. :think:

The specs that I know:

-'91 KDX250
-new top end and cylider sleeve .1 over
-new boysen reeds
-pro circuit pipe and silencer
-enduro engineering bark busters
-decent tires, and brakes.
-new gaskets on cases, clutch seems good

so far it starts, runs, and goes...well!

Everything seems to work.

Total cost including the trip to Philly to get it...$1078

Hey Wolf, you got it finally. Congrats on the new ride. A little over a g? Can't beat it. Did the little woman make the trip with you so didn't have to sing Christmas carols to yourself the whole way there and back?

Not too bad. You'll find some info here on the KDX 250's. You'll need to work on the jetting to get it really moving. The kicker gear is most likely has most of its teeth stripped. Its a pretty easy repair though. Get a manual, it will really be helpful.

yes, she went along. it was a long ride, but it was worth it. :cool:

kdx 250's sure are a fun breed! Awesome bike for the right terrain.

That kicker thing could be the spring that sits behind the racheting mechanisim gear. They get worn out after years worth of kicking. I have a 92' 200 that had the exact same symptoms. Easy fix. Oh by the way nice bike!! :aj: :ride:

How long of a drive was it? I can't believe you didn't pull over on the way home and rip it up a hill or something.

a little over 11 hours each way.

And beleeeeeeeeeeive me I was checking out some terrain in the way home . I think the only thing that stopped me was my broken collar bone and lack of riding gear.

I have a '94 250. Depending on your area, the jets are going to need replacing if they haven't been before. Looks like you have a PC pipe on there, so the previous owner may well have dialed the jets and needle in when they put the pipe on.

I have to change my jets and needle position when the weather turns hot/cold.

I have had my 250 for 4 years and have ridden 40,000 Klm plus on it. Awesome bike. I commute on it, ride it on trails when I can and ride it all the time !!

The exhaust valves need a fair amout of maintance to keep the bike running well. I have destroyed my valves a few times. Just replaced them again after 10,000 klm.

DONT let the valves get too choked up and jam, they can break and do all kinds of vile damage to the top end etc. I know from first hand experience.

From your pics, looks like a nice clean bike for the year.

Nice bike! I'd go through and repack your swingarm bearings and check torques on things. It's a good winter saturday project. Service manual is recommended for sure! Congrats on the purchase...

Definately good advice. When I got my 250 the bearings seemed fine, but after a ride or two I noticed a squeak which turned out to be trashed swingarm bearings. Not hard to fix, just a hassle.
