I'm looking at possibly picking up a 97 RM250 but I seem to recall that one of the late 90's RM250's had a weak gearbox. Has anyone else heard this? Any other pros or cons feedback on the 97 would be great. They are asking $2300 OBO for it which doesn't sould too bad.

Never heard any bad problems about the 97 rm250. I got a 96 and never had problems with the gear box. 2300 sounds a little high. Where are you located? I am possibly selling my bike within the next week or so. It is a lot cheaper than 2300 also, and it has decent work done to it. PM me if interested.

I've had trouble with the gearbox on my 96' as well as a riding bud did with his 97'. Check out the post on the RM rod for more details.

I have to ad a little now that I thought about it some more. They are a great riding bike, the fork was great and the motor was snappy. I sold mine for 2400 four years ago when I bought my yzf and it was in great shape. I bought a 01' this summer for 2300 from a guy that bought it new this spring so it one tank ran through it. So I guess the 2300 seems out of site to me.

i too own a 1997 rm 250 that i have just finished a rebuild on. after stripping the hole engine and transmission, eveything looked good in the transmission department. all gears and shift forks and shift drum looked ok and the only drama i have had with bike is clutch basket wearing out to much and snapping friction plates other than that i am very happy with bike after the 5 years i have owned it for

I may have found a 01 for about the same price. I've found a 98 going for $1800 so, I think I'm getting a better picture on their value.

Thanks all,

Hey hsv2112, just curious what plug do you use in your RM. Do you use the fancy one that costs heaps or just an iridium one. I'm using iridium at the mo seems to be ok.

man, that price is way high...
I bought my box stock rm250 (2003) fro $2200 last december from prosource..
It now has a full tune mcr suspension, tag upper, fat bar, rk chain and sunstar sprokets.. the list goes on... I was only asking $3,000obo....
I have a 90's era rm125, i love it but stick with a 2000 or newer model..

Rog, i do use the factory plug and they do cost a fair bit, but i do a lot of riding in the middle of no were so i have bought a cheaper after market one to keep in my camel pack in case i foul a plug whilst im riding out there
i cant think of anythink worse than being stuck in the middle of no were if it was something as simple as fouled plug.

i think i was reading in another thread that you pay over $100 for a genuine plug, if this correct this is a hell of a lot for a spark plug. i am paying about $40 for one over here in australia.

I run the BR8ES ($1.70) or BR8EG (3.50) in my 250, and I can't tell the difference between the $3.50 plug and the $10 ones.

hsv. Thanks for that. Yep shop told me $120 but I might double check somewhere else incase they are wrong (they shouldn't be much dearer than yours). Think i'll just bite the bullet and fork out for it.

I run a NGK BR8ES and it runs great. any plug that runs for more than $5 is a ripoff! the highest i've ever seen was $30 but that was for a fourstroke. don't waste money on a plug they aren't worth it. i've never heard of a performance difference either.
