Looking to get into some trail riding. Im 6'3 250lbs so i need something bigger. I've ridden a small 125cc 4 stroke knockoff china bike but thats about it. Im thinking ill have to start off with a 250, they seem to be more my size.

I would get a 250cc 2 stroke if I were you for your size and weight but I dont think your going to get a 250cc for $1000 that is a good running bike. I ride the 125cc 2 stroke yamaha after the fact the 250 yamaha was way to fast for my 150lb body. The 125's are fun because they are easy to throw around and control.

I know they are both quite old but there is a 1989 cr250 and a 1988 kx250 for sale here. The kx has a new top end. Both run great. Both are about the same price. Would you guys recommend either? I'm leaning more toward the kx right now.

My vote would be neither. Those MX bikes are geared all wrong for the trail...especially a beginner. It is a HUGE leap going from a cheap Chinese 125 4 stroke to a 250 MX bike. They have very snappy power than comes on hard. I would recommend buying an old Honda XR 250, which are 4 stroke bikes designed for the trail. You might find an old XR400 that needs work for around a grand...shouldnt be a problem if you are very mechanically inclined. You also might find a Kawasaki KDX200/220 that needs some work for around $1000. If you dont know, a KDX is a 2 stroke trail bike...excellent bikes. If you had a bigger budget, my recommendations would be completely different.
