Need help...

Hi all this is my first post, i would like to know how to remove the alternator from my cr250. does it take a ''fork'' puller or is there any way you can remove it without a puller.

There is no alternators on the bike. There is a stator

To get to the stator, you have to remove the flywheel. And yes you need a special puller. Your local dealer should have them in stock for sale

Trying to pull the rotor off with a jawed puller is VERY dangerous, and sometimes does not work. It will destroy the first few threads, if not bend the crank end. The special tool is cheap, relatively safe, and fits a lot of different models. And, its a great tool to have! Vintage Bob

my buddies and I are really cheap and do lots of "farmer fixes".. the easiest way we found to remove the stator is to...
1. wrap a strap behind the stator, at least one full revolution
2. let the motor hang under its own weight, we usually throw the strap around a beam in the roof of the garage
3. loosen the stator nut.
4. using a brass hammer, or dead blow hit the nut untill the stator releases itself

the weight of the motor and the impact of the hammer is enough to loosen the stator from the tapered shaft..
I DON'T CONDONE THIS METHOD!! , however up here (in the great white north) stator pullers cost A LOT of money, and we only ride old cheap machines.. By striking the stator you risk damaging the motor in quite a few ways. You could ruin the crank bearings, demagnetize the stator, crack the magneto, ruin the threads on the crank shaft.. I repeat, this is risky, but we do it because we're cheap country boys..

There are a lot of ways to break stuff, however my buddies and I risk it just cause we can't justify spending $300 on a puller when we have 15 ratchet straps on hand..

3 things jump out at me, 1, The 300 dollar rotor puller really only cost 15 dollars for the best ones money can buy. 2, If this method is true, you really should video tape this. 3, Are you seemingly drunk? Vintage Bob

I've pulled the stator off my current bike 3 times using this method.. the stator, crank shaft, and nut don't show any wear/damage on them.. Say what you want, but we've used this method on bikes, atvs, and sleds..

My buddies and I rarely own stuff for more than year.. Our ridiculous "method" is universal.. (universally terrible, but thats besides the point).. it works for every machine, 2 wheeled, 4 wheeled, or tracked.. Arctic Cat, Polaris, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki.. Polaris are some of the most expensive, both stator and primary pullers..

I said it before, and I'll say it again.. This is a terrible way to do things, but you can't beat it when you've only paid $150 for the bike/sled..

I have done some less than desirable methods for disassemble in the last 35 years. NEVER a sling was involved. How you get it behind the rotor??? You are not by chance a millwright, or reasonable facsimile? Get on the video. Never mind the 15 dollar part, that fits darn near every dirtbike. A 200lb+ bike dropping sends shivers down my back. Believe it or not, it does not sound as damaging as using a jawed puller though? You either have the rotor flying at an outstanding rate of speed, or the puller, and not to mention the possible damage, as stated before to the crank. Vintage Bob

this is done with the motor out of the bike/sled.. no 200 lbs bike hanging from the roof, the 20 lbs motor, hanging about 2 feet off the ground.. i usually sit on a rolling stool with the motor about 2 inches above your lap..
unbolt the two stator bolts from the motor, and wrap the strap behind it (push the strap down along side it, sometimes it helps to turn the motor over).. this isn't a 10,000lbs tow strap, but a 200lb tie down ratcheting strap, 1" wide, very thin.
it only takes a little tap to get the stator to start sliding off.. remove the nut and pull the stator off by hand.
