Okay. My local Race Tech tuner talked be out of MX-Tech (expensive but awesome) and guaranteed me that he would work with me until I was happy. He also wants to do my porting and carb mods.

Is there a big difference in porting jobs? My guy swears he can port for my desires and bore my carb as good as the next guy. Should I let him port and bore my carb to 36mm or should I send of to Eric Gorr and RB accordingly. He is going to port for 180 and bore my carb for 45. Are there good reasons why I should not let my guy attempt these mods?

Thanks for the responses.

Don't know about the carb & porting, but I have the MX-Tech valving on my YZF 250 and now no one else will ever get my suspension work. It is absolutely the best I have ever used.:)

Oh, well if he swears... ;)

Seriously, the key thing is to get a sense of his track record. Do you know his work? Do your friends who have used him recommend him? If he's good, knows what he's doing, and has hordes of previous customers falling all over themselves to tell you what a great job he did on their bike, then you'll be ok. If he's a better talker than a tuner, or ports the engine to be a top-end screamer when you wanted some bottom end, then you'll regret it. We don't know him so we're not going to be able to help you there.

One more thing. Boring is just one part of the RB carb mod. Don't think that just boring your carb to 36mm will be equivalent.

Make it count

This is a one shot deal, once it's done it's DONE. No going back if you're not happy. I would send the stuff out to guys that do have a track record, Eric gore will port you for 120 and the rb carb will be 165. I would go with these guys. To many HAPPY cumtomers.

A comment and a question...

IMHO MX Tech is well worth the investment and you get service after the sale. It works guranteed.

Second, regarding the comment on porting - I'd personally opt for Gorr or Fredette. But it's my understanding that when you do this it's not just the cost of the porting but you have to have the cylinder replated too and that's an extra $180. So $120 + $180 = $300

AFAIK, you only need replating if there is damage, or if the cylinder is being bored to a larger size. Normal porting to a cylinder in good shape should not require replating.
BTW, Eric Gorr does a great job.

Why take a chance with expensive parts? Go with the sure thing. IMO, I doubt the local guy could have as much experience as the above mentioned 3 specialists.

How long ago was it done and have you looked at the plating lately?

I picked up this 96 used, this bike owner made a lot of promises on what he did to it, but it was still a unknown. all my bikes, I maintain the crap out of. I found the power valve a bit sticky. so off came the top end! and off to mr Gorr for inspect and sizing, he also serviced the power valve. and when it was there I had him port it to fredettes spec's. "This bike is a 200 with a 220 cyclinder on it. I'm not sure what year the 220 cyclinder was though? if the plating was in need of replating. he had a 240 big bore cyclinder & piston. he was going to give me a deal on thougth. :p
