Ask your local DMV if they will accept a Motor Vehicle Defective Title Bond, they run about 10% of the value of the bike, it basicly holds the DMV harmless.

If they do, you will get a title in your name and the ever popular green sticker.

And the DMV should and will make you get a Vin verification also

If the DMV provides you with a last known address for the person who legally had the last title, a certified letter (return receipt requested) requesting the title from him personally should suffice. Just bring the returned certified letter to the dmv along w/ a bill of sale from the person who sold it to you. It will show that you made the attempt to contact the previous owner and the DMV should be able to issue a new title in your name. They may require you to bring the bike in for verification of the VIN #. Or, get a certification of VIN from your local police dept. Some states will accept a pencil rubbing of the VIN but you'd have to check with your DMV for that.
good luck.

i went to the dmv and they told me there has never been a title for this bike, all the lady there recommended was some long process of send in a letter to the main office and hoping that someone feels sorry for you and decides to help, it also could take months! is there a way to find out whos name the bike was sold to originaly?

You could contact the manufactor and provide them with the VIN. They in turn should be able to tell you which dealer it was sold to and they should have a record of the 1st initial buyer. The manufactor however, are very difficult to get info out of. Also through them, you could apply for a replacement MCO (manufactors certificate of origin) and take the MCO to the dmv to apply for title.

Definately get the MCO...It is your key to getting the title. It's like GOLD!! Basically, the MCO shows who it was assigned to (dealer and 1st buyer) and with it, the dmv won't turn you away. When you get the MCO, send a certified letter to the buyer on the back. When it comes back, take it along with the mco, bill of sale, any other paperwork your states DMV requests to the dmv and you should be good to go. Bug that guy for the MCO!!!

I bought a bike from a guy who had brought it up from California with no title. I wrote a letter to the main California DMV office regarding the lack of title and they were very helpful. They got me whatever it was I needed to get my Idaho title in a relatively short time.

Also, if this guy sais he has the MCO, it means that a title has never been applied for in any state. It would have been collected by the dmv if application had been made. Since there is a MCO floating around you have to get your hands on it.

If it was first sold out of state and never registered in CA you may be shafted. They are pretty bad about letting newly registered bikes coming to Cal.
