Yeah, it took quite a bit of work to really carry off the appearance change. I found converting the frame to the oval tubing, changing the forks from 43's to 48's dropping about 8 lbs from the motor rather time consuming. It was worth it though, it sure does look like a new 250 dont it! Oh, this one is named "Larry".

Unfortunately RoseLog wont be an option this weekend - though I would love to. I am dealing with a rather nasty tendonitis (biker's elbow) - cant even hold a cup of coffee without it hurting, not to mention fat and outta shape from the winter!

I did get in a ride on Saturday though - I love the bike. Suspension works well! Motor, while not as strong on the bottom as the 300, is super smooth. I do have to retrain myself to do a bit more shifting than what I could get away with on Eugene.

Mike,

Did your wife fall for the "it is just new plastic on the old bike" trick?

I know one guy who made it work for quite some time.

xsnrg - Variety of reasons, one of which that new 300s are pretty hard to come by, and simply a desire to try something new on for size. I rode Fred T's 05 250 and really liked it, and in my never ending pursuit of wanting to be just like Fred, I had to get a bike just like his :nener: His bike's power delivery was soooo smooooooth - and i thought that might be what this old man needs! this thing feels so light, and I love the ergos to. (BTW - I still have Eugene - for sale, pass the word on!)

Mike - nah, Sheila would never fall for that old trick - this is both good and bad - she is way to in tune with the bikes, she would notice stuff like "gee didnt your bike used to have round frame tubes, and only 43 mm forks", the flip side is, she can understand when I talk about stuff like powervalves, compression dampening etc.

Creeper - No crashes yet - they will come soon though! yep we certainly will see who is the better rider now! :ride: No more excuses for you like "gee you are on a 300 - waaa waaa waaaa". I was just out on the grass track doing a quick lap a few minutes ago in fact. Come on up and humiliate me anytime Kurt!

Had the same problem 3-4 years ago. I got one of those tendonitis braces that goes on your arm, and it helped me for riding. You may want to try one.

Mark - yeah, I have been wearing one for several weeks now. The problem started with both elbows. Left one is fine now, right is a major pain still! I find it really gets hurting again when I do a bunch of wrenching the garage etc. Riding - well, I wont comment about that!

I really need to back off from doing anything with my right arm for a while - including time at the computer or time wrenching the garage! Eliminating riding for a while - not an option!

Look up Forestiers Disease. (D.I.S.H.) Has a tendency to cause tendonitus, I discovered I have it now which explains the back problems and tendon soreness in my elbows. I had an x ray done on my neck. Getting an MRI today to see what damage is done to nerves in my neck and hopefully some treatment opeions soon!

Enjoy the new bike!

Hey Mike…. I feel for you on the elbow tendonitis…. Very painful, and can be a nagging, long-term affliction.

I’ve had it for two years, alternating between the left and right side. It all started in the spring of 2003 when I went to the batting cages with my son. It was a pretty cool day, and without warming up, took a whack at about 50 fastballs. Two days later I had extreme burning pain just below my right elbow. I brushed it off and figured it’d feel better within a week. Ha! It probably didn’t help that I type and use the mouse 8-9 hours a day. Click your mouse and watch the tendon/muscle twitch just below the elbow on the outside of your forearm.

Riding really aggravated it too. So did brushing my teeth and unzipping my drawers. Twist a screwdriver? Fuggitaboutit! The constant clenching on the handlebars while riding just caused more inflammation, swelling, and damage to the tendon. The tendons are like new rubber bands when we’re young; pliable and springy. As we age, the tendons loose their elasticity and don’t stretch as well. Instead stretching, they snap, tear, and fray, which causes blood to flow to the area, which inflames them. They need a lot of rest to fully heal (if at all), which is pretty hard when you’re always using your hands.

I saw 2 specialists, and finally had a cortisone injection. At first, the cortisone looks like a golf ball-sized lump below your elbow, and then shrinks as it’s absorbed into your system. I felt 1000% relief within 3-5 days of the injection. But, I kept riding and using it, so the relief was short-lived. The cortisone is just to help the area heal; it doesn’t cure it, and actually can be detrimental if you get 2-3 shots in the same area. It got to the point that shaking hands with someone would almost bring me to my knees in tears, literally. For the few days after a riding weekend, the arm was so sore and painful I couldn’t bend it, and I was popping IB like M&Ms.

Also tried a 4 month prescription of a strong anti-inflammatory drug, along with 3 months of physical therapy. The PT cost me $700, and didn’t do a damn bit of good. The tendonitis was also starting in my left elbow, and for no apparent reason. The anti-inflammatory did help some, but I don’t think it cured it (the script ran out this past fall). For whatever reason, over this past winter it has felt better then it has in a long time. Don’t know why for sure, but I hope it sticks. I’d rather have another broken collarbone and be out for 3 months than put up with tendonitis for 2 years. And I’m staying away from batting cages!

Fred - Interesting read on that DISH disorder. Hope your testing helps you get some treatment real soon.

Fred - that DISH aint the kinda of DISH i would be looking for! I hope all goes OK in treating it. My wife has a degenerative arthritis (what I found said DISH was a form of that?), - it aint fun for Sheila.

SmitDog - man, i sure hope I am not up against what you went through! It all started because I was gonna get in shape - started working on the weight bench - and one day evidently went to far. Now, even a few 12oz curls hurt enough I must drink left handed! At least my left elbow has mellowed out a bit. The other day, as I was meeting someone and they held their hand out for a handshake, I just cringed - I gave them a rather limp fish sorta handshake back and it still about brought me to my knees!

I know...i need to knock off all the keyboard time at work...stay home and...ride?....wrench???? (and it will get worse!). I have only had limited "formal" treatment so far (Doc said "take it easy dont do things that make it hurt, take IB) - informally, well, my office is across the hall from a PT - Doc's office is upstairs. I think i need to do some more follow up. I know what they will say: dont ride, dont wrench. At least the PT is a biker chick (Hardly Ableson unfortunately), so she can perhaps understand! She gave me a ice pack this morning in fact. That makes it feel better for a little while.

Hey Folks

After reading through this string thought I should add my two cents along with some pictorial evidence as well.

Neal O'Brien [2big4akdx] and I [Nestrick] were out riding last weekend when all this "New Plastic" of Mike's showed up on the trail. Seems we were supposed to meet Mike at the Meadows in the M-72 parking lot at 1000 hrs ... we got there at about 0930, seein's how we were staying just down the road in Grayling having ridden West Higgins the day before [Friday, 08APR05] ... to our amazement, on pulling into the lot a half hour early, there's Mike ... parked, unloaded, geared up, helmet on, standing there looking at something behind his truck. As we come to a stop it all becomes clear ... there stands a virgin KTM 250exc ... with Mike smiling so hard he couldn't get his helmet off!

The picture [below left] should give all of you that rare "twinge" in the pit of your stomach that only comes when you're standing over a brand new bike at the head of a trail on a perfect day for riding ... notice there's not a spec of dirt anywhere on the bike ... do think Mike was ready?

Despite the glad tidings of the moment ... there's always an unforeseen problem looming in the wings [below right] ... by the time Neal & I got ready to ride, Neal's desire to be the first to ride Mike’s new bike had overwhelmed his conscience and he had a brief tussle with Mike ... while there may be other descriptions of this event, here's my photographic evidence ... I report, you be the judge!

Moving to other subjects covered herein ... sorry to hear that this 'elbow' thing has grown into such a problem Mike ... sounds like you and Smit-Dog have entered an 'enduro' of the physical kind? Can't say that it will be easily overcome without considerable rest of the affected joint but perhaps you might consider undergoing an MRI to have the situation scoped out for an accurate assessment. Natural loss of cartilage, muscle tears, damage to tendons, bone spurs in the joint and a variety of other ailments can all lead to similar symptoms ... some can be readily relieved, others cannot ... but knowing exactly what is wrong might make enduring the treatment a tad easier.

Speaking of treatments ... I too am 'hurting’ after my short ride with you last Saturday. That fall I managed on the icy road has finally been diagnosed ... cracked a bone in my shoulder and tore my rotator cuff ... ah, the glory of MRI science and medical progress ... looks like riding's going to be on my back burner for a while along with some potential surgery and/or recuperative therapy.

Terry - bummer on the shoulder deal! You did seem to be hurtin when Neal and I came back to find where you were! :ride: equal "fall down go boom" - comes with the territory unfortunately!

Now, truth be told, Terry, when you and Neal pulled in i was heading out for my second short ride to help break young Larry in. I had already gotten some mud on him before then! And...I am amazed you neglected to point out how long I had you going thinking it really was Eugene with new plastic . :nener: I think I even had Neal going for a couple minutes there before he got out of the Jeep! (he did catch on sooner though)

I hope you heal up quick Terry so you can get back to riding.- or just do like the rest of us - ignore doctors orders and ride anyhow!

That's the elbow I had it in as well. Twisting the ole' throttle hurts, don't it? I also had tendon problems with my left shoulder for 6 years, went through cortisone (cortison injected directly into the shoulder is a major ouchy!) and ended up becoming allergic to a whole group of anti-inflammatories, which includes ibuprofen, because I was taking so many. This was quite awhile ago, and was one of the reasons I quit riding when I was younger.

Tendons disorders are "self-defeating" in that we need the darn things to do what we need to do each day, which just feeds more inflammation.

Smit-Dog hit on a key factor - warm up the area by subtle movement each morning. Take ibuprofen or aspirin to help reduce swelling (tylenol isn't as good because it's mainly a pain reliever, not a very good anti-inflammatory). Rest as often as you can. You may even want to try one of the stretch wraps over the whole area to lessen the use of the affected area and let other areas do some of the work (don't wrap too tightly). Geez, I should be giving medical advice since I haven't been in the medical field since 1981 :coocoo: . Sounds like if you haven't seen a doctor, you should. Good luck!

This thread is beginning to sound like the over-40 geriatric complaint department!
