new shift shaft?

My shift shaft on my 1978 dt205 project is bent.. mebbe about 5 degrees right at the narrowing part 3 inches in from the splines.

How crazy would it be to heat up the bar with a torch and try and bend it back?

Barring that, anyone have one to sell? Speed and Spend has them for 80 bucks, which feels a little pricier than I'd like.

the only reason I need to fix it is that the oil seal is opened up at this angle, and the crankcase oil dribbles out. Part of me just wants to goosh a blob of rtv sealant into the hole. :|

If you knew a machinist, there are center marks in that shaft. Put it between centers on an engine lathe and true it. 60 to 80 dollars.

Try a local yamaha dealer first. I only use S&S if i cant get it from the dealer or a used one from flea bay

Straighten it like foxforks said.

You don't have to heat it. Just put it between centers or on V-blocks and spin it to find the high spot. If you don't have access to a press you can put it in a vice with aluminum jaws and place a piece of pipe over the bent end and bend it back until it's straight. Then re-check it in your V-blocks. You can make a set of V-blocks using angle iron.

I took it to a local machine shop, and the guy did just that. He did a great job, too. I was very happy.

And he didn't charge me. other shops wanted to bill me $35 for an hour's worth of work. yikes.
