I would like to ride an enduro next year but, would like to know what I need as far as gear, bike set up, training, etc. to compete. I have 2003 XR250.

A friend of mine told me to just enter a C class and aim for just finishing the race.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Your friend is pretty well right on with what they said. One other thing I'd suggest is riding with some one whose done it before.

There will be a group of us (Heartland Spodes) riding a race together in November in the Panhandle of Texas. Several of our group have never ridden one before. Some of us ride several a year. You are welcome to hook up with our group.

I agree, I rode my first enduro earlier this year and all my dad said was to finish. I was lucky, I actuly finished without houring out.

What are some things I will need to bring to the race?

Do I need:

1) camel back
2) numbers
3) handgaurds with aluminum bar
4) time card holder
5) tools to carry along
6) etc...

Thanks

Camelback . . .definately.

Numbers . . . . probably not.

Handguards . . . .what part of Texas? Is there trees, cactus, etc? Probably a good idea regardless.

Card holder . . . . probably not, most people tape the card to the front fender. Unless Texas does it differently.

Tools . . . .not a bad idea, but just the basics. No need to attempt a tire repair or engine rebuild on your first race.

I have found that the best thing you can do is assure yourself that the bike is prepped perfectly. Do this by THURSDAY before the race.

And leave your timekeeping to the "A" rider that you have on your row. You don't have one? Get one!!

Other than that, you might pick a race that is known for being light on the "C" riders, try to finish, and have a good time.

I've got questions too. What about the time keeping and how do you do it, deal with it. Do you just start on your row and attemp to keep pace with the others. Overall, where can I find more information on the processes of the events, as to time keeping and how the races will work. I'm looking to go on some of the TWMC events out here in California.

Thanks for any help, and sorry to jump in on your post.

I just raced in my first one a month ago. Check the website of whoever is holding the race. There will be information on their particular rules. Also check the AMA website for the enduro rules.

As far as getting your bike ready, you may want some aluminum handguards if there are trees. If it is just brush, then plastic handguards are OK. How will you know? You probably won't, so prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

As far as timekeeping, I started on a row with three others. After ten seconds, I never saw any of them again. The guy in front (Dlafleur of DRN fame) was in front of me and the other two were behind me. If you go slow, your riding mate or buddy will have to slow down so you can keep up with him. If you were like me, you will be late, late and late again. I had a roll chart holder, bought the roll chart, pieced it all together with tape the night before and all that. After 1/3 of the way into the race of setting it for resets, I said forget it. Every reset I came to, I just kept riding instead of resting. I was several minutes late. I would just say go out and have a loooong, fun trail ride. I am guessing most people are late rather than early in their first enduro. You will know what's up before you get to the first checkpoint as to whether you are going too fast or not.
