newest KDX owner

Just bought a new-in-crate 2006 KDX200. Have ridden it four times and love it. I also have a 2008 KLX450 that I enjoy.
Just found this site, and hope I can learn and help others.

I am an old-skool motocrosser/enduro rider from Michigan.....Husky 250
WR and Maico 400(square-barrel!)....from the sixties and seventies. I am a retired aerospace engineer, but work in the parts department of a Honda/Kawasaki shop to keep busy and feed my new habit: Kawasaki dirt bikes.

Hope to be seeing more of you guys in the days to come.

Welcome, I think you'll find the KDX is a great trail bike. I've had mine since 2001 and though I own more powerful machines, the KDX always impresses me with its 4 stroke like powerband. I'm curious to how you feel it compares to the KLX450. I've been entertaining adding a 4 stroke to the stable. Does the KLX feel as heavy as the numbers would indicate? I've seen some really tricked out KLX's.

Excellent. Great to see another new member! I joined recently, but did a load of reading here as I was shopping for a used KDX for the past few months. Found and have been wrenching on my 1989 KDX200 recently. Great resource here!!

The KLX, even though it is about 20lbs heavier, does not feel like a bigger bike. The fact that it sags several inches when I sit on it (the KDX does not) helps a great deal in that respect. I have a 30" inseam ...I'm a short dude.... so being able to touch the ground means a lot in rider comfort.

The power is, of course, a little more pronounced AND more linear with the 4-stroke, but that's to be expected. I was somewhat disappointed in the low-end delivery of the 450, but once it's turning about 2500rpm, power is not an issue. The KDX, on the other hand, has pretty good low end for a small displacement 2-stroke. I'm actually a fan of two-strokes and the KDX200 is a long-time dream come true. I'll probably bequeath it to my grandson when I die. :nod:

Thanks for the info on KLX. I'm also short with 30" inseam. The stock rear spring for KDX suits a heavier rider. Mine was intolerable until I changed to a lighter rear spring and set the race sag. that made a world of difference and I can touch the ground much easier. I weigh 150 lbs. I believe stock spring is best suited to riders around 180 lbs. I understand the WR450 Yamaha is about 10 lbs lighter than the KLX with a stronger mid and top end than the KLX. All the mags seem to rave over the KLX though so I've got to find someone to let me try one. Once you dial in the KDX and clean up the over rich stock jetting, you'll find it really has plenty of snap from the bottom on up.

I work for a Kawasaki dealer and just had to make a few calls to other dealers to get a line on this one. I also found 2 other new-in-crate KDX200's, but they were both 2004 models. I went for the last model year(2006), even though they are virtually identical the last four or five years.

You would be surprised what your dealer can scrounge up if you ask. I went looking for a past year leftover when I bough the crf and the one place I called had a 3 yr old 250x in the crate. There's probly an abundance of small bore smokers collecting dust in the back corner of warehouses across the country.

I think you are right Joe, but I couldn't find a recent new yz125 for a good price this spring, so I bought a new '06 cr125 (against all the magazine review's advice). I think I stole the cr at $3299.00 OTD. And it's a GREAT bike. It will be better when I actually spend some time to jet it properly.

Keep your eyes on e-*** early in the new year for all kinds of "leftover" deals. After trying your local dealers of course.

Newbie and new 06 KDX200

I too have purchased a new in the crate 2006 KDX about 4 months ago. I absolutely love my new bike!
I also wanted to thank all of those on this site that have posted some great info on KDX's, its of great value and help to me especially after being away from dirt bikes for 20 years.
look forward to getting to know more about my KDX.
By the way, dont forget to grease all areas that need grease as the factory doesnt lube them and certainly nor does the dealer...Also oil the airfilter,mine was dry.Go over nuts and bolts and torque them to specs, as well as checking the tranny for correct levels of oil and the coolant.
I also own an 2009 KTM300xcw-e, great bike as well.

Yes, you did steal it. We have an unsold '05 CR125 at our shop and the price is $3599.....before taxes, setup, documentation, etc.
You got the deal of the decade. :nod:
