ohio rider in michigan

I am from ohio and make the 6 hour trip to michigan 3 times a year to ride your awsome trails. We allways go to the mio /hunt creek loop system. Really cool trails! I was wondering what other trail systems are similar to this one. Tight single track? Also what is up with Michigan Quad riders Every time i come up on one on the trail they absolutely will not move over no matter how slow they are going? Is there a seceret battle going on up there between you guys?

I find that the rev limiter works well to get the message to the poky quad ridders in the trails. Pull up behind them pin the throttle till the rpm's are redlined. That usually gets there attention.

If you really want an experiance trail ridding then Drummond Island is were you need to be. It is like no other place in Michigan. I go there every Memorial weekend with a group. Its a riot.

From my experience, most of them (not all) are out for a leisurely ride and have no clue about trail manners. They have no idea what it's like to actually want to go fast through the woods, either. I especially hate it when I come head-on with a quad and they stop dead in the middle of the trail so that I have to maneuver through the woods to get around them, even though there's plenty of room if they just get over to one side. Not that it's a big deal most of the time, but sometimes when you have to go over logs while climbing up a hill or whatever to get around them it gets a little annoying. It's not a battle really, just more of an ignorance thing...

I'm from Indiana and also and make the long drive to ride the wonderful trail systems in Michigan. I actually grew up in Michigan and somehow ended up in Indiana. Anyway, if you're driving all the way to the Mio / Hunt Creek area I would recommend driving another couple of hours and checking out the Tomohawk B loop and the Red Bridge loop. These loops are very similar to Mio and Hunt Creek - maybe a little nicer since there's less whoops.
These three loops; Mio/Hunt Creek, Tomohawk B, and Red Bridge are possible the best loops in the LP - I'll be riding them in a couple of weeks!!!!
Never seen a Quad on the Red Bridge loop.

There are a lot of great trails up here. Have you tried the Cycle Conservation Club of Michigan or our DNR's website. You can download trails maps at the DNR site and CCC membership comes with a great trail map book. Don't know about those big-n-slow quads, I just try to get their attention, pass by and wave. Especially those riding two up with a young'un one their lap. Enojy!

The quad thing is inexperience or ignorance. I've met a lot of nice people riding quads that have no idea that they are sometimes in the way. My son and I were riding at the meadows last year and almost had a head on coming over a hill with two quads. My son grabbed to much front brake and went over the bars. The guy on the quad was very upset and kept saying how sorry he was. Not really his fault. When we got back upright and ready to go he got off the trail to let us pass. His wife however blocked the trail and would'nt move. When I pointed to her side of the trail (I just wanted her to climb out a bit and give us some room our side was blocked by some type of bush.) she shook her head and said she was afraid. We ended up nosing into the bush so she could pass.

It is entirely possible because of background noises for the quad guys to not know we are behind them, I have seen this many times! Perhaps we need to take a SERIOUS look at a SERIOUS horn application for our dirtbikes (attach one of those boat horns somehow)..
Another possibility - I think SOME of the quad vrs bike issues are very simular to "road rage" issues that we see on the highways.. It is also VERY simular to the "street walkers" you find blocking the roads in many intercitys. I have traveled MANY miles on both Dirt and Street bike and can tell you that I have experienced these issues MANY times. I believe that our affluent lifestyles (ever been to a 3rd world country??) have produced some real "ME FIRST" people.
Instead of being thankful for the opportunity to ride and just ENJOYING the ride, we tend to get caught up into "I am mad at the world and you are part of it" or "this is MY space and YOU are intruding"... It's an attitude thing guys!!!
Perhaps we all need to catch the "gratitude attitude"?

I believe that in the vast majority of the cases it's either the quad rider doesn't hear you, or they are ignorant of trail etiquette. Sure, there are a small percentage of riders who know you're back there, but for whatever reason don't pull over.

Last year I got stuck behind a quad for about a mile, and he was just putting along. Quite a few times I got on his tail and revved my engine. I had my son behind me, so didn't want to have him try a side pass with a quad. We finally came to an intersection stop, so I pulled up along side of him and politely reminded him that he should pull over and allow others to pass. He honestly had no clue about trail etiquette, and just thought we were following him.

And just last weekend, I was riding close behind a few guys on bikes, revving the engine at times, trying to be heard, and later found out the rider in front never heard or saw me behind them.

The Berg has a horn. I never really had many problems with them thar four wheeler types? It must be a geno thing. :eek: I remember once up @ a CCC ride at Mio. There was a few that were poking along. I passed them the same way, I was passed at a Hare scramble. On left with mm's to spare. :ohmy:

If you want tight trails go to Wolverine. Not only are the trails tight you don't have to worry about any quads!

Here is a horn for your bike. Its small, cheep, and loud.

Its a Radioshack personal alarm and a honda kill switch.

what trails in MI are close to Irons ?

Also I bought a DNR sticker, anything else I need to be able to ride up there ?
